(True story, I found this graphic in a post I made 3 years ago, and I am zero percent ashamed to reuse it ?)
Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s theme is: Halloween/Creepy Freebie
So, let us talk about some crap you can read/watch that will get you in the Halloween spirit! I used to actually stay away from darker stuff. And that time is loooong past, as I now crave it. So without further ado, some of the creepy books I have loved, some I want to read, and some shows that I recommend that are creeptastic! (I also tried to not repeat myself from that other post, so check it out for more recommendations!)
Eerie Books I Recommend
Creepy Looking Stuff I Want to Read
Shows That Are Creeptastic
In case you hate sleep or something. Actually, I was hesitant to recommend The Walking Dead, but I dare say that Season 9 is actually decent so far? Just skip like, 5-8 and you’ll be golden. Also The Handmaid’s Tale is scary because it’s like, a preview of next weekend or something.
What are some of your favorite spooky/creepy/mysterious books and shows? Do share!

Over the years, I’ve see “The Accident Season” on lots of lists but never look at it. Despite a. not watching the original show, and b. not being a fan of horror/spooky/creepy, I *MIGHT* watch an episode of ‘Sabrina.’ Just because. 😉
Ohhh you should! It isn’t like, SCARY or anything. Just very atmospheric! And Sabrina… well, did you like the 90s version? Because it is straight up the antithesis. ?
Great list! I love that you said you’ve gotten more into creepy books lately, that’s awesome. 😀 Not Even Bones is one I just bought and I’m really excited to read it! I have never heard of Outpost before but the cover really caught my eye so I might have to add it to my TBR. And I just saw that The Uninvited was on sale in the kindle US store so I might have to go grab that one! 🙂 I also want to read Into the Drowning Deep and Bird Box soon.

Check out my T10T here!
Aw thanks! Not Even Bones was AWESOME- so messed up but really good. Outpost is an adult sci-fi but really good- dark, but really complex, and the sequel comes out soon so I bet you can grab book 1 on sale sooN! Oh I absolutely recommend The Uninvited. Cat Winters has such a knack for that stuff.
You did books and shows (yeah)! The Uninvited looks good to me solely based on the cover- I’m always a sucker for that misty woods look. And I can vouch for Into the drowning Deep and Echoes.
Yes to all the shows! Requiem yes (fist pump) okay it wasn’t the BEST ever but it was creepy AF? And Dark is awesome, as you know. 🙂
I miss 12 Monkeys and OB.
I had to- especially since SO much of the shit we’ve watched fits the bill here hah. The Univited was fabulous- it pairs real-era horrors (WWI, the Spanish Influenza pandemic) with the paranormal. I loved it. Mermurder is just long. That is legitimately the only thing from stopping me from reading it. Echoes… well I just don’t happen to own it. Yet.
Requiem was SO creepy! You know, it is one of the first creepy ones we watched, I wonder if it would hold up, so many shows later. Whatever, I still love her coat, and the dude, what was his name? Best part of the show hahaha.
I miss them too! Why did they have to go away? And then Fear taunts me with Cole, only to take him away again?! RUDE.
I think Requiem WOULD hold up? It was quite creepy! And yeah… the coat.
I’m such a wimp I don’t think I could tackle too scary books. My imagination is so overactive most of the time! It’s ridiculous! 🙂 I am intrigued by Sabrina though.
I kind of wish I could be scared, so maybe we should trade for a few days ?
That Outpost cover is A+ Going to check that out on goodreads now!
I’m so curious about the new Sabrina but no netgalley. 🙁
Yesss you should! It is so underrated, and really dark but complex! UGH I am sorry, if it helps, it’s just okay so far?
THE ARSONIST is SOOOOO good!! It’s not really creepy– but it’s SUCH a good story! I’m about to start Sabrina ASAP though!!!
Yayy I definitely need to read it ASAP- I have had it for years, it is getting ridiculous. I hope you enjoy Sabrina!!
Nice list! I used to watch The Walking Dead but stopped several seasons ago because some of the characters were developing in ways I didn’t particularly care for. I did enjoy the show up until that point though. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
Aw thanks! I agree tbh- I *almost* quit. If it hadn’t been for Angela Kang (the new showrunner) I would have quit no question. So far, she seems to be bringing the characters back into focus, fingers crossed! Did you stay long enough for the Glenn debacle?
I wasn’t watching at that point, but I did hear about it. I have also heard that Rick’s character will be gone soon. Even though I haven’t watched the show in a while, hearing that made me sad!
Great list, Shannon! Yes, I love Feed so much, and I really want to read Into the Drowning Deep, too. I can’t wait to watch the new Sabrina – it looks so fun!
Aw thanks! You are the sole reason I read (and now recommend!) Feed hahahah. I am excited to read Mermurder- it is just long and I am impatient hahah. I hope you love Sabrina!!
Basically this post is telling me i need to get my stuff together and read some Mira Grant! I love Orphan Black!
Bwhahah YEP. I love her, I really need to read more of her. And yessss Orphan Black was SO GOOD, I miss it!
Just the covers alone made me wanna scream. hehe. 🙂 🙂 Thanks for this list. Most of these are on my TBR already but some i haven’t heard of. I’ll check them out.
Here’s my TTT: https://lilisblissfulpages.wordpress.com/2018/10/30/ten-characters-id-like-to-cosplay/
Aw thanks! I hope you enjoy them if you do! Seriously, why are all the covers SO messed up? ?
The Accident Season has been on my list forever, I don’t know why I haven’t read it yet. Now you’ve put me in such an “Orphan Black” mood but I don’t have time to rewatch anything! Darn you! xD I’m in the middle of Not Even Bones but keep having to put it aside for book club reads and other deadlines. I’m going to try and pick it up tonight to get in the Halloween spirit.
Oooh yay I hope you ended up enjoying Not Even Bones! Also, I feel you, the only thing I ever rewatch is The 100 hahah. When I am in an Orphan Black mood, I just watch this and it helps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsTc_o5ixU8
I love all three of your lists. And YES! Someone else who has read Outpost. I have the sequel on my end table waiting for me in November. I’m thinking of making it my Thanksgiving vacation read. When I Am Through With You is definitely creepy. I miss Orphan Black so much and I think The Walking Dead is actually better this season the past few. Haven’t started Sabrina yet because I’m waiting to finish Hill House. Have a wonderful creepy holiday.
OOOH you have the sequel already!??! HOWWWW? I am so jealous! I wished for it on Netgalley but never heard anything. I miss Orphan Black too! I have heard good things about Hill House, I hope you are enjoying it. And I agree, TWD is SO much better so far this season- fingers crossed that it keeps it up!
The cover to The Ravenous gives me the creeps! Also, The Handmaid’s tale gives me so much anxiety and I’m not one for horror shows so the fear is just piling on at this point 🙂
Dude right? What IS that!?!?? And same with Handmaid’s- I can only watch it in VERY small doses because it is so upsetting!
Ooh, I love this list. I really liked The Last Harvest. I felt “meh” about Bird Box, which is an unpopular opinion because everyone loves that book. I also need to read The Arsonist and The Hunger. I hope they’re creepy!
Aw thanks! I remember reading that you didn’t love Bird Box! Hopefully I will have better luck, one day 28 years from now when I read it haha. And yes, I hope so too, fingers crossed!
I still need to watch the new Sabrina, but I’m excited. I loved the first season of Orphan Black so I need to continue. I have Into the Drowning Deep on my wish list too, and I really loved Bird Box. Can’t wait for the movie! I need to read Feed and Not Even Bones, and pretty much all Cat Winters books.

I might try Sabrina this week and yeah – Handmaid’s Tale…might be to true to life lol
I just finished the Haunting of Hill House and that was Creeptastic!

Echoes was really good. I finished it in one day. Couldn’t put it down.
Outpost! That cover! I don’t know what it’s about, but that cover makes it look very creepy…
I always recommend Amy Lukavics books- they are all creepy and brilliant. The Hunger was a bit of a let down however.

Love The Accident Season!!! I want to read Echoes and Bird Box. Sabrina is on my to watch list. I’ve heard good things!!!
Way to recycle those graphics. 🙂 Now come on, am I really supposed to believe that you’re going to read a book called Bird Box? Bahahaha! I don’t think so, my friend. It’ll never happen. *snorts*
Not that I necessarily love creepy shows, but after seeing it on your list I’m pretty sure I need to watch Sabrina. I’m torn on The Hunger. I grew up with a summer cabin very near the site of the Donner Party’s dismal end (our lake was named after Tamsen Donner), so I know a lot about it…which makes me hesitant (because I know it’ll straight piss me off if they get the facts wrong, especially the fact that Tamsen’s husband was a charismatic idiot who doomed them all, and Reed was abrasive but smart…but they drove him away after accidentally killing a man….anyway, I digress). Yay creepy things!
The Accident Season is a yes for you. You know I love Fowley-Doyle. And I want to read The Arsonist too. I heard incredible things about that book.
Neither The Arsonist nor The Accident Season really wowed me, but I really liked Berserker and keep trying to push it on my students. I have a very narrow range of creepy stuff that I like. I like to be mystified, weirded out, and tense, but not grossed out or truly scared. On the other hand, the phrase “cozy mystery” makes me gag. I’m not reading mysteries to be cozy, thank you.
I HATE jump scares on shows. Buffy is about as scary as I can go. I have a friend who’s a HUGE Supernatural fan, and I tried watching some just to be supportive, but it was WAY too freaky for me.
These certainly do look creepy! I bought the Bird Box ebook a while and still haven’t gotten to it because you know how these things go lol. The Call is one that I really want to read too. I’m going to have to pass on the shows and movies though because I am a total wimp with scary stuff, even more so when I have to watch it as opposed to reading it! I liked Berserker though. I guess I’m used to reading about creatures or people with supernatural powers.
Yayyy CREEPY THINGS!! I really love The Accident Season and that whole autumn aesthetic with all the creepy vibes. NICE. I still need to read the author’s second book though. ?Because I’m a thousand percent behind on everything whoops.?I also definitely feel like Unwind is one of the creepiest book I’ve ever read?! STILL NOT OVER IT and it’s been like 4 years…
I just finished season 8 of The Walking Dead on Netflix, and I thought the last few episodes were decent, but it was really rough in the middle. Still, I’ve heard good things about season 9, so I’m glad you agree! Wish I could watch it right now instead of having to wait a year.
I somehow didn’t find a lot of really eerie reads this year, which is sort of disappointing? Or maybe I’ve just been jaded by the fact that I’ve been reading dark fantasy all year (since, I mean, I did read The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein last month, but it just wasn’t as dark as I was expecting lol).
I did binge watch The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix, though, and if anyone has Netflix, I can’t recommend that show enough! I didn’t want to go to bed because I wanted to finish it. Also, I’ve decided that I want a real-life Hill House, please and thank you.
OOoh! Lots of awesome creepy Halloween reads that I need to check out! I still need to watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, since I just finished reading the graphic novel!
Yay for reusing graphics!! I haven’t read any of these yet, but I’ve heard great things about Not Even Bones. And 12 Monkeys is still on my to-watch list. Sigh, gotta get on that. Although, lately bar prep has me craving something ridiculous and escapist, so I’m considering going back and trying The 100 season 2, lol. Should probably wait until after NaNoWriMo though. I’m hoping to make a tiny bit more progress on that before the month ends.
