A few times, I told you about the shows I watched. And it was fun, so I am going to do it again! This was another pretty good batch, but I have also been more willing to quit stuff I don’t luck. Also, I spend a significant portion of my time rewatching The 100, so. ?

So, a list of the shows I’ve been watching since whenever the hell the last post posted was!

I’ve also watched/am watching some of the latest seasons of shows I’d talked about before! Shows like…

Snowpiercer Season 3
Fear the Walking Dead Season 7
The Walking Dead Season 11

I am so glad that Fear got better again! I used to loooove it and now it is at least close to being that great again. Snowpiercer slays as always, and TWD is… still tolerable, yay!

2021- ♦ Netflix

Renewed for Season 2

I almost quit this one, no joke. It started off slow, and then was hyper-brutal, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t end up completely invested by the end. I had some mixed feelings about it, clearly, but by the first episode, the premise is clear: People in debt are invited to compete in a series of games for money. A lot of money, or so it seems because I don’t know anything about Korean money.

And then nothing bad at all happens the end.

So yeah, while the entire premise is shocking and at times quite awful, it’s the characters’ stories that stood out for me. The acting is straight up incredible, and while the outcomes were, for the most part, predictable, I was still really invested.

It me.

So yeah, I definitely see why this one took the world by storm, and I generally agree. I will say, while I definitely will watch Season 2, I think I almost would have been okay if this was a one-and-done with a different ending? But I’m glad for the people involved in the show, so I’m game. Also, if you have watched it, please watch the SNL clip, it cracked me up so hard (but contains all the spoilers for the series, so):

Verdict: 👍

2021- ♦ NBC/Hulu

Renewed for Season 2

Oooh this is cheesy, y’all! And I was here for it. Look, remember how The 100 Pilot was a little… cringey? Well, multiply it, then extend it. La Brea isn’t exactly going to be winning any Emmys this season, but it’s a super exciting and unique premise, so I’ll take it. The dialogue and acting leave something to be desired, but the story is interesting enough. Plus has all the staples you miss in The 100: Sky People (literally called that), poorly received survival lotteries, MacGyver doctoring, anomaly-ish stuff, bear traps, and so much more!

It’s… the actual Anomaly, right? Gabriel is gonna be pissed that he missed this stop tbh.

The concept of a hugeass hole opening in the middle of a city, and people literally falling through time called my name. And it really didn’t disappoint, for me anyway. If you’re here for some kind of meaningful conversations and high caliber acting and writing… this isn’t it. But if you’re looking for fun, excitement, and mammoths, you’ve found your jam!

And… camels apparently?

Verdict: 👍

2021- ♦ Netflix

Renewal Status Unknown

I guess once you start down the path of Netflix’s Korean-produced shows, you go all the way down. Here for it, frankly. Anyway, this one is basically Dry meets Away, with some scenes from The 100 thrown in. Featuring several of your faves from Squid Game! So, there’s no water on Earth, because humanity is trash and ruined the climate, so let’s go look for some on the moon! Only just kidding, that didn’t go great, so we’re going to put the kibosh on that, but we need a few brave (and gullible) folks to go grab some “samples”. Of what? Well, I know now that I watched it, but you don’t.

Sir enjoys understatements, I guess.

Anyway, once we get to the moon… things are not any better than Earth. And as we see, maybe they’re even worse? Because a bunch of folks died the last time they sent a group, including the Main Science Lady’s sister. So MSL is pretty bummed, but also wants to know what is up. And then… look, I can’t tell you anything else, but things get hairy. And exciting. And a little weird. Okay, a lot weird.

Look, they are really into understatements in the Korean space program.

Verdict: 👍

2021 ♦ Peacock/BBC

Miniseries

This was a Greg-insisted show, as many are wont to be. I can’t help it, I’m terrible at watching shows of my own accord. Or rather, starting them. Anyway, I won’t lie, I was skeptical at first! I mean, how exciting can this one British lady be underwater? Well, pretty damn exciting, as it turns out.

My question exactly!

So basically, some shenanigans are happening on this submarine- someone died, but was it murder? That is what British Aunt Jackie (she reminds me so much of Laurie Metcalf in her younger years that she will always be British Aunt Jackie, not even sorry) has to figure out. Only, she’s gotta go under the sea to figure it out. There is so much more to the story than meets the eye, though. The Russians are being… well, The Russians, the US is being… well, the US, so you know it’s more than just a simple whodunit.

This could literally be anyone and/or everyone on board off board in this story, tbh.

And my personal favorite, a look into British Aunt Jackie’s personal life, which really tugs at the ol’ heartstrings. Honestly, do yourselves a favor and give this one a go. It’s a great mystery/thriller/action/drama, and it’s short and sweet and will leave you wholly satisfied.

 Verdict: 👍👍

2021- ♦ Showtime

Renewed for Season 2

It’s like Alive meets Wonkru meets The Wilds meets Now and Then. Yes, that sounds like a lot, because it is a lot. I got a free month of Showtime just to watch it, because I was insanely curious and just had a feeling I would love it. And oh, love it I did! It was absolutely bonkers from start to finish, which frankly, I am here for.

My thoughts exactly.

So it’s 1996 and a girls’ high school soccer team (the aforementioned and titular Yellowjackets, of course) has made it to Nationals. They’re psyched, as anyone would be, but there’s also drama among the teammates. Because duh. Anyway, whoopsie, their plane crashes, and who knows what will happen next? We know that at least some of them survived, because in the first episode we meet their grownass selves dealing with the aftermath. And holy aftermath.

You don’t say?

So there are secrets upon secrets, and shenanigans layers deep- both from the direct aftermath of the crash, but also from the time period before the crash, and obviously, in the 25 years since. I fell in love with every single girl- they were all messy as hell, but they all had redeeming qualities, too. And I am not saying another thing about it, because 90% of the time it was me staring at the screen, jaw dropped, like:

Verdict: 👍👍

2020 ♦ Hulu/FX

Miniseries

This is another Greg-pushed show. And it’s another one that I am glad I ended up watching, as it was pretty thought provoking, even though parts of it made me stabby. I don’t even know how to fully explain it without giving stuff away, but basically, you think it’s going to be a show about this Russian dude and his job at a tech company, but it’s not. It’s about his girlfriend, and the company, and quasi-time travel, all because this tech ass (who I referred to as Expired Hippie™, because he literally looks like a hippie who has been on the shelf wayyy past his sell-by date) misses his daughter and is also kind of a sociopath.

An Expired Hippie™, for reference. Beside him is his… whatever she is, but she has the crazy eyes.

Anyway, things get pretty insane pretty quickly. I mean, you can tell from the start that this place is probably worse than whatever Jeff Bezos does to his employees your basic tech giant, based solely on the creepy little girl statue. But that’s not all! Literally not a single character has virtually any measure of sanity to speak of, nor grip on reality. Expired Hippie™ is pretending to care about science, but he is only willing to believe his particular theory, screw any other ideas.

Things just get more wild from there. The upside of the show is, it’s incredibly thought provoking and intense. The downside is, well, the whole show takes on a pretty pessimistic (IMO, anyway) view on a lot of things. Which, I can’t say much about because of spoilers, but let’s just say I disagreed with some stuff. But overall, worth it! And only 8 episodes!

Verdict: 👍

2021- ♦ Peacock

Renewed for Season 2

Did I at least 90% start this show because Sara Thompson is in it? Yes. Was the other 10% that Greg peer pressured me into it? Also yes.

She’s genuinely not a thing like the psychos she plays, promise.

Sure, there’s also the part where it is based on the book written by an author I really enjoy. You’d think that would have been a motivator, but actually, it was almost a deterrent. I remembered liking the book, and didn’t want to mess up my thoughts maybe? I also only remembered the book slightly though, so there’s that.

Just kidding, I know nothing.

I did recall the premise, though: 5 kids in detention, one ends up dead. Who’s the murderer? Also, the dead kid was kind of The Worst™ and both pre- and postmortem enjoyed flaunting people’s deepest, darkest secrets on his creepy blog. So lots of people would have been cool with this kid’s demise, is the point.

So, ma’am, this makes you a suspect in a murder investigation.

Anyway, the gang goes back and forth, trusting each other, suspecting each other, and each having their secrets brutally exposed, but now, the whole world is watching, not just their school. I thought it was excellent, compulsively watchable, and dare I say, better than the book? So if you haven’t watched it…

Verdict: 👍👍

What are some of your current favorite shows? Anything I must watch? Have you seen any of these? I am currently in the midst another The 100 rewatch, obviously, and there are a ton of shows on my watchlist, but I am always here for recommendations/peer pressure (obviously, heh)!

  1. Squid Game- same. It’s like a train wreck you can’t look away from. Plus, Korea. That one dude was SO awful and then seeing him in th Silent sea ha. La brea I’m ashamed to admit I sort of fell off track with it but I may still finish!

I LOVED Silent Sea. One of my favorites.

YES to Vigil. If there’s one show recently I loved even MORE than Silent Sea, it’s Vigil. Fricking rocks. And thanks for the shout out!!!! 🙂 I loved all about this show.

Yellowjackets… watching now *munches on snacks lol*

DEvs! Yes what a mind f*ck.

Nice picture with Sara! And yay peer preesure! You are paying me back now with Yellowjackets which I am going to BINGE.

    • YES exactly! And I think he was supposed to be a Good Guy in SS? Who can tell. Ohh yeah La Brea was good, I think it got better toward the end, too- less cringey heh. How far did you get?

Vigil was SO good- I was honestly surprised by how much I loved it (and didn’t want it to end!) Glad you are enjoying Yellowjackets, too!!

      • I think I’m three episodes into La Brea? I was just getting into it too when I got sidetracked (insert eye roll). Of course now I’m into Yellowjackets but I will probably go back to La Brea- I like the premise. 🙂

I felt the same way about Vigil. It didn’t hurt that I knew Suranne Jones from Dr. Foster so I knew she could get out there character- wise ha ha!

        • Ha well that is fair- I get sidetracked a lot when trying to START anything. I really need to start something new again, but with TWD and Snowpiercer, and Fear back next week.. plus if I am being honest it’s mostly because I am deep into my fave, S4 of The 100 😂

  2. Kel

Knew I was never going to get around to watching Squid Game, so I watched the SNL clip instead and laughed, lol. Haven’t been watching a ton of TV, but I think I’m on Season 3 of Falling Skies?

  3. I’ve seen Squid Game and The Silent Sea. I didn’t LOVE them but I enjoyed them. We are all about the Korean shows here lol

I was interested in Yellowjackets but I don’t have that channel but I might try Devs.

Greg is a good source of TV watching inspiration lol

    Karen @For What It’s Worth

  4. I was the same way about Squid Games. I almost completely gave up after the second episode, but then I gave it another try and got sucked back in. I think it could have been a one and done as well. I gave up on TWD when Rick left. I tried this past year to go back and pick it up, but I just didn’t like the jump into the “future”, it was too jarring for me. 🙁 I think there is a new spinoff coming out though with Maggie and Negen? Thinking about giving that a try. I just started watching The Underground Railroad. Another one that I’d given up on with the first episode, but once I started again I was hooked. Have you watched Never Have I Ever? I adored it! It was a comedy, but had some really good emotional parts too!

    • Yes yes exactly! I was so BORED on the first one but then… couldn’t stop! I think a lot of people gave up either after Glenn, or after Rick, both of which are understandable. I think if I didn’t know it was “ending” (so stupid with the spinoffs tbh- there’s the Maggie/Negan one, the Carol/Daryl one, a bunch of like… anthology-type ones, and the Rick movies, so it may never actually end ugh) I may have given up too- but I actually kind of liked S10 (and 11, so far), Angela Kang has done a really good job bringing life back to it, IMO. Oooh I will have to check those both out, thanks for the recommendations!

  5. And here I thought Devs was a comedy about software developers. 😀

Thanks- this is a great set of additions to add to my list! I’m (as always) behind on current things BUT I’ve been enjoying The Astrological Guide to Broken Hearts, Emily in Paris, and The Witcher lately. I do need to watch Snowpiercer because I HATED the movie and people keep raving about the show. Do you have a referral code for Peacock? I think there’s other things to watch there (a…Star Trek maybe?) but I’m all over doing a trial period and binging the few shows I’m curious about and NOT paying for yet another damned streaming service. 😀

    • Bwhahah decidedly NOT a comedy 😂 Basically the antithesis of a comedy, frankly. But interesting, regardless. And yayyy I am glad to be of service! I LOVE show Snowpiercer, though I have not watched the movie, I have heard it is VERY different so hopefully you’ll like it. Plus Daveed Diggs! So no, I canceled Peacock! I think I got a free trial… somehow? But then ended up paying for it to watch OOUIL and so Sam could watch the Olympics, but then as soon as I finished OOUIL I canceled it. I’ll shell out the $5 when S2 comes out though!

  6. There are always a million things I want to watch but I’m sooo bad at watching things. I can’t binge watch to save my life. LOL I do want to check out One of Us Is Lying though. I liked the book, so I’m curious.
