A few times,I told you about the shows I watched. And it was fun, so I am going to do it again! As always, most of them would not have been so much as blips on my radar if not for Greg @ Book Haven, who should really get all the credit, because left to my own devices, I really would spend all my time rewatching The 100, because I clearly have an unhealthy obsession.

So, a list of the mostly good shows I’ve been watching since whenever the hell the last post posted was!

2017 ♦ Netflix

Just a One Season Deal

I don’t remember a ton about this if we’re being honest, because it was one of the first ones on this list that I saw, and so… memory is hard. It’s French, and it is your usual lovely, yet creepy European town with all the deep dark secrets to unfurl. Girls go missing, as they generally do in these shows.  While it wasn’t the most unique premise ever, it was entertaining and fairly exciting and also, only 6 episodes, so why not?

Verdict: 👍

2015– ♦ AMC/Amazon Prime

3 Seasons; Renewal Status Unknown

This is such a fun and thought provoking show! It’s all about AIs, or Synths as they’re called in the show. At first, the main family in the show doesn’t even think they should have a synth, but eventually, they end up getting one (mostly because the parents are hot messes who argue about literally everything). Only their synth seems to have…. sentient qualities. And so begins the question of whether sentient synths should have right, whether they should exist at all. It’s an awesome parallel to some of the human rights issues we’re dealing with today, and it handles it all really well- lots of gray morality! If they don’t renew this, I am going to throw stuff.

Verdict: 👍👍

2018- ♦ YouTube

Renewed for Season 2

Honestly, who would have thought that freaking YouTube would produce a worthwhile show? Well, it freaking did. This show is awesome. The premise is wholly unique, and I think there is a lot more to the world that we still have to uncover. It gets brutal at times, but I daresay our main character Henry has any idea what she’s in for next season. This season, it was mostly about Henry realizing her “powers”, trying to figure out how to contain them, and navigating a really messy teenage experience. There’s sexual assault, but it is handled really responsibly, and I think if you can handle it, it’s really well done and worth watching. Plus she gets closer to her family, and makes friends and such. It’s really very good, and I’ll have to get me another free month trial to watch Season 2!

Verdict: 👍👍

2014-2019 ♦ The CW/Netflix

Renewed for 5th and Final Season

This is so damn heartwarming. I started watching it when it first started (you know, back when Jane was an aforementioned virgin, accidentally impregnated) and like any telenovela worth its salt, it’s been through so many incredible (and often appropriately cheesy while still being emotive) storylines. I won’t say much since it’d be all the spoilers, but it’s about family, love, and just figuring out who the hell you want to be. I am going to miss it when it ends, but I think it’s had a good run. And I really think/hope Season 5 will be epic!

Verdict: 👍👍

2018- ♦ Netflix

No idea because I won’t be watching the next one.

Oooh this shit is a trainwreck! And the first show I have quit in a very, very long time! I don’t even feel bad about it! Okay so there’s this girl, and a Virtual Reality game and…  I have no idea what else? I think she likes one of the friends she made in the game, but instead of just being cool, she like… keeps undressing and touching the girl’s stuff without her knowledge? And then the “game”… it’s less a game, and more people just meandering around a fictional world, but then I think some dude was killed by the game? Honestly who even cares, it is terrible.

She just looks like she’s going to rub her bits on your sofa while you’re passed out. Just saying.

Verdict: 👎👎

2016- ♦ Netflix

Renewed for Season 3

Brazilian dystopians are obviously the genre I didn’t know how much I needed. It’s basically a Hunger Games-esque testing scenario where the “winners” make it to this utopian island where they get to… idk, not starve I guess. But the testing is brutal- and sometimes even deadly. And there are no guarantees that the island (Offshore) will be less so. Who can you trust? Honestly I don’t think anyone. The characters are really morally gray too, which I love. Actually, the whole show is. And I still don’t know if there is any “good guy” or even place you’d want to be! Can’t wait for Season 3!

Verdict: 👍👍

2017- ♦ USA/Netflix

Season 2 Currently Airing

So the first season was starring Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman, and it was honestly a pretty twisty show! Good ol’ Jess goes off her rocker and murders the crap out of some dude while she’s out for an afternoon at the lake with her family. But Bill Pullman, he doesn’t believe that she’s just a murderer. So we get to see what led Jess to commit these crimes, which is bananas, but then we also see way too much backstory on Pullman’s creepy sex fetishes and no one wants that. I do kind of want to try Season 2, but it’s an anthology so it doesn’t follow the same characters (save Pullman and his creepiness) so I mean, maybe one day.

“You wrecked my sandcastle, you piece of shit!” –Jess, probably

Verdict: 👍

2018- ♦ Hulu

Renewed for Season 2

Honestly if it wasn’t for one episode of awesomeness I think I’d give this the vomit face. More than anything, I am mad at this show? For stringing me along for 8 episodes, giving me one decent one, then ending it with a non-ending. And yes, it’s renewed for another season, but apparently it’s a companion season, not a direct next season. What am I supposed to do with that?!

The whole premise is the dude, Henry, who’s a lawyer, and comes back home to Castle Rock because Bill Skarsgård wants to talk to him. Bill is a guy who’s been found being kept in Shawshank, but who isn’t one of the actual prisoners. So who is he? The main problem with this whole show is, would anyone even care if Skarsgård wiped out the entire town? No, you wouldn’t. And that is why it doesn’t work. The characters are just so not fleshed out! So why would I care about them? Then! Then they make me give a shit about a few of them for one episode, then they just go back to their bullshit. I quit.

Fucking no Bill, I do not. Care to enlighten us?

Verdict: 👎

2018– ♦ Netflix

Renewel Status Unknown

If they don’t renew this show, then frankly, that is rude. I actually liked this one quite a bit, even though I wasn’t a superfan of the main character. You know, what’s-her-name. Her boyfriend Harry was delightful though! The overall premise is that basically, a few select women are able to shift into others’ bodies. And that is thought provoking for sure. And of course all sorts of shady side business goes down. It’s also a coming of age story for Harry and um… pause for Google… JUNE, there it is. And a love story. And a family story. But it does end on a hell of a cliffhanger, so they need a second season confirmation stat.

Not exactly who Harry’d expected to wake up next to…

Verdict: 👍

2017– ♦ Hulu

Renewed for Season 2

Am I ever going to not watch a show starring Josh Hutcherson? Of course not. So here we are. This show isn’t meant to be taken seriously; it’s ridiculous and fabulous. It also has a really unprecedented amount of male nudity so there’s that. Basically, Josh beats this video game, and two people travel back in time because he is the “hero” from the past who unlocked their clues (the game) from the future. Only, Josh is a complete mess, and Tiger and Wolf are messes too, just more violent. It’s funny, it’s charming, and it’s honestly the break I need from all the bleak shit I watch.

Verdict: 👍👍

2018-2019 ♦ Netflix

I guess there’s a second season. But only a second season? Idk Finnish TV folks are confusing.

This show had a lot of potential but it high key squandered some of its most promising plot points in favor of some really less-than-exciting ones. I actually didn’t watch all the episodes, because someone kept watching ahead (in fairness, I was dragging my feet) so I skipped around to catch up- I don’t think I missed much. I was actually going to quit because I was bored, and the subtitles were hurting my eyes, but THEN! Then there was a swim team, and a cult, and so of course I jumped back in! Only… those weren’t fleshed out as well as they could have (and frankly, should have) been. Instead, there was a ton of focus on some stupid company that the victim worked with that had nothing to do with anything and was a waste of my time. I did like the cops in charge, though.

Verdict: 👎

2014-  ♦ The CW/ Netflix

Season 6 Filming

Season 5 has concluded, and so of course I am now rewatching the series for the 28,294th time. I actually have no idea how many times I have watched it now, but I am on Season 3 again. Because ugh, hiatuses are hard. Plus, didn’t we just have to make it through a really crappy long one?

Verdict: Do you even have to ask!?

What are some of your current favorite shows? Anything I must watch? Have you seen any of these?

  1. I feel so proud of you for watching more shows than just The 100 on repeat. ?Honestly this would be me, left to my own devices, just forever rereading The Raven Cycle SO WHAT CAN I SAY. OBSESSIONS FOR THE WIN. Anyway! I haven’t seen any of these and am also not surprised.?I basically watch Stranger Things and The Good Place and Brooklyn 99 these days. Although I have good intentions for more?! I am just…not organised. THAT REALLY GORY STABBING GIF THOUGH WOW.

    • AW thanks! Seriously, sometimes it is just comforting to watch the same thing! It’s hard to get invested in all new people and such, I think I lack the emotional capacity to care about more than one cast of characters at a time hahah. Dude right!? That WAS gory! The show in general wasn’t super gory, but that moment was! It was a messed up show, actually. I only want to watch the next season if it is just as messed up!

    • DUDE you have to! HAVE. TO. Only 13 episodes each so I mean, that’s less than 24 hours of your life. DOOOO ITTTT.

And yes, Impulse does, BUT you can get a free month! It’s only like 10 episodes I think so you can watch them within a month for sure!

  2. Molly Mortensen

I love Humans and this summer I binged Jane the Virgin with me sister. Thanks for the recommendations and for saving me from a couple of these I probably would’ve tried. Like the Sinner. Creepy sex flashbacks, no thanks.

I’m currently watching Haven and it’s okay. Safe written by Harlen Coban is pretty good if you’re in the mood for a mystery. Have you seen the Tribe? It’s an old New Zealand dystopian that I used to watch. I just saw it was on Amazon Prime. It’s probably hokey now but I used to like it ten years ago haha. Same premise as a lot of dystopians where all the adults die off.

    Have a lovely weekend.

    • Dude, SO many creepy flashbacks. And like- some were cool, but some… look, no one cares about Bill Pullman’s weird sex life! The Tribe sounds like it’d be my kind of thing, I must check that out! And I have Safe on my list, too, so I am glad to hear it’s good! Haven… hmm I do not know if I have heard of that, I am going to have to look it up now!

  3. Future Man was something I loved that I never thought I would need! It’s great for when you’re in-between shows and just want a good laugh with a bit of raunchy humor. Season 2 can’t come soon enough! I’m in Brazil and I didn’t know 3% was such a big thing. It looks like I’m missing out!

    • Bwhahah right!? It was so WEIRD, but also so fun! It really is perfect for a good laugh- I’d watch it in between episodes of Handmaid’s Tale because goodness, you NEED something lighthearted in there! And yeah, Idk if it’s popular in Brazil, but it’s fairly popular here? And I really like it!

  4. Why is The Forest so hard to remember? I think I liked it, but I had the same problem. Impulse of course is my jam, I love that show. Humans still hasn’t been renewed? What is wrong with them????

Kiss Me First lol. Your little caption there made me laugh… and oh my gosh The Sinner? Is that like the best stabbing GIF ever? She’s just working it… even when he goes down she keeps stabbing. Dang…

Castle Rock was a mess. And what’s up with you and Deadwind? That show was GOOD. Okay boring AF sometimes, but you know Skarppi was fun. She like only smiled once I think in the whole show though. Definitely needs a vacation.

    • Ha because it is exactly like 10 of the other shows we’ve watched? ? I mean- a lot of them were set in a forest, but THE Forest was the only one that was honest about it. And then they all involved murder. And rain, and a nice aerial tree shot. And right? I am going to be SO mad if it isn’t. Like they even killed off Gemma Chan so she could star in movies, what else do you need to do!?

I feel like whoever made that GIF really slowed it down so we could see ALL the gory details. Shockingly, I couldn’t find a GIF for Kiss Me FIrst, and there was no way I cared enough to make one.

Castle Rock. I am still mad about that show. And Deadwind did NOT live up to its potential! Like- the whole sunken ship, and then the business thing, ugh, and then not bothering with the cult OR the swimming!? What even!? Like if I had to hear about that dumb company one more time… and then it didn’t even have anything to DO with anything, why did they put us through that!?

  5. AHHHH “JANE THE VIRGIN.” That is such a cozy show for me! I love how fluffy it is and how much I adore the characters and the clever narrator and all the meta humor and the plot twists alsdifjowieufj. It’s a fantastic show.

  6. I have only seen The Innocents and The 100 out of these, but I guess I now know what shows to watch (and which not to) while I work out when I run out of The Walking Dead (and iZombie, which I only watch when my mom’s here, since we watch that one together). Except I find that clip of The Sinner very disturbing. Yikes!!

  7. That GIF for The Sinner is BRUTAL. I haven’t heard of most of these, but Future Man is one I plan on watching in the future! We don’t do Hulu anymore, just Netflix, so boooooo. I still need to catch up on The 100, so don’t hate me. I need to be emotionally ready to have my heart stomped on, okay?

Have you watched Sense 8?? I loved that! It was cancelled way too soon, but they were able to come back and do one really long episode that wrapped things up. I think you’d enjoy it.

    Lindsi @ Do You Dog-ear?

  8. I used to watch SOME “Jane the Virgin,” and I did enjoy it, but it’s been a LOOONG time since I watched an episode. SOMEDAY I’ll have to revisit it. Maybe once I finish a couple of the other shows first. 😉

  9. I’ve only been re-watching B99 and FRIENDS because I have much love for those shows. ?? BUTTTT I DO REALLY WANT TO WATCH JANE THE VIRGIN SOON! I actually already have the first five episodes downloaded on my Netflix app. 😉

  10. I really need to do a new shows post since I have been trying so many lately trying to find a fluffy and cute show to watch. Or a twisty and suspenseful show to watch. I started watching the 100 but didn’t get that far and now I can’t remember that much about it – I had no idea that it had been on for 5 seasons!!

  11. I really do want to watch Future Man, but I don’t have Hulu. My sister keeps thinking of getting it though, so we’ll see. There are SO many shows I’d like to watch but I suck at binge watching, so it would take me forever. hah

  12. Kel

Wait, Merlin is in Humans? Dang it, now I need to find time to try that show too. And I haven’t totally given up on The 100, but I’m not exactly sure when I’ll get back to it. Work and bar prep are now conspiring to keep me from life again. 😛 It’s weird, but the prospect of having seasons to watch is…daunting right now? I don’t know. My head’s a mess. I have been keeping up with the new season of The Gifted (interesting, though not thrilled with their new big baddie…lack of logic in play). And they’re older, but I always recommend Grand Hotel and The Mentalist. 🙂

  13. I really like Harry from The Innocents as well. 🙂 I have seen a couple seasons of The 100 and enjoyed it. It’s been so long since I watched it though. I am watching Riverdale right now, thanks to Greg.
