The 100 Episode 5×01: Eden

Just a reminder, spoilers galore!! Like ALL the spoilers- proceed with caution!

Holy crap guys, we’re BACK! Eleven damn months after Praimfaya, the powers that be have graced us with The 100 Season Premiere! And it was pretty epic, tbh. Obviously worth the wait. And, as always, it has left us wanting to know all the things. So… let’s just do this!

One is the Loneliest Number

We start- and by start, I mean more than the first half of the show- with Clarke. Just Clarke. On Earth, all by her lonesome. Which was a choice I needn’t have worried about the show making, because damn, Eliza made it work. Honestly, it takes chops to pull of that much alone screen-time, and Eliza just proved she has them in spades.

Can we be real for a second? Raise your hand if you’d have even survived the first 42 days in Becca’s Lab…. no one? Yeah me either. I’d be crying, probably talking to Ghost Sinclair or whoever pops in (maybe Ghost Roan, he did love a Clarke pep talk…) But this is what makes Clarke so incredible, she just keeps keepin’ on. Not without moments of doubt, of course. When she realizes that she won’t be living with Abby and the others in the bunker… well, that was crushing to watch. Because seriously, put yourself in that position and tell me how you keep going.

She ventures back to Arkadia, but all she’s rewarded with is the devastating losses of her past. I found this to be one of the most profound scenes in the show, because Clarke stops surviving for a second, and is really faced with what she’s lost, who she’s lost. I imagine that would be one of the hardest parts- for this woman who’s been so focused on survival, everyone’s survival, to suddenly be face to face with nothing but time and ghosts.

I cried when I watched it. I cried making the GIF. And I cried just now thinking about it.

But she keeps trying, keeps surviving. Eating literal roadkill bugs from the Rover windshield, wearing Jasper’s goggles to brave the sandstorms. She fights until she can’t fight anymore. And she almost gives up. When there appears to be nothing left, just endless wasteland, she almost calls it.

With Jasper’s goggles on and a piece of Lexa’s throne in her hand, no less. I can’t.

But a bird saves her life by flying in the direction of its home. She, in turn, thanks said bird and then shoots it, because dinner. Anyway, this is how she finds her new home in a beautiful, seemingly untouched village of  Louwoda Kliron Kru. Only, even though the land was spared, its people were not. Clarke must deal with more dead bodies, more solitude. Or not.

Oh hi.

Little Natblida

Oh look, it’s a human girl! Clarke of course is running to see what’s up with this actual living person, but Madi’s having none of it. Look, I don’t blame Madi for being scared, the kid lost everyone she knew, and also, she’s a Grounder. And clearly, a hidden Natblida, so she has some experience with this stuff. But did she need to lure Clarke into a bear trap? I think not. That’s just rude.

Anyway, she commissions a painting from Clarke Clarke draws her a picture, and apparently that’s all it takes to win over a filthy six year old who was trying to kill you, and now they’re besties. They do each other’s hair, Clarke lets her drive, it’s basically a permanent little sister-big sister slumber party. Until some assholes land in Eden, and all bets are off, because this is The 100 after all, and no one can just hang out in peace for too long. Sorry guys, you had over 5 years, consider yourselves lucky.

Meanwhile, in Space…

My heart is full of the happy, because so many of our faves are back! Shall we recap them individually first? Let’s!

  • Bellamy is Space Dad, and I love it. He’s still charming and witty, and clearly the leader of this group. I feel like he’ll be fiercely protective of them on Earth, and I adore it. He chooses Murphy duty over Latrine Duty, and frankly, that’s love.
  • Raven is actually fighting Echo… and winning! About time that she gets to brawl it out. She has not solved the aforementioned “five year problem”, which is irritating her to no end, because Raven Reyes is awesome and doesn’t enjoy failure.
  • Emori is my favorite space transformation by far! Girl finally can just be her own woman, and I love it! No more Emori attached to Otan, or ALIE, or Murphy… she’s just Emori, new tech geek and spacewalker, and I am fucking Here. For. It.
  • Monty is trying (and failing) to make algae palatable. He seems to dig his role as Space Chef, and I am living for his apron. Also, he remembers Earth as really really shitty and isn’t exactly clamoring to get back.
  • Harper is still with Monty, which made my damn day. I also kind of want her to be pregnant but that’s just wishful thinking and the fact that I didn’t see much of her full body.
  • Murphy is such a fucking mess, Murphying all over the Ark. He’s got a case of the grumpies so he has banished himself from the group, and also Emori wants to stab him. He tries to fight Bellamy, but forgets that Bellamy is not just his new Dad, but his stronger and buffer Dad.
  • Echo is there too. She’s much more chill and reasonable but I’d be much obliged if she could take her hands off Bellamy, please and thanks.

I love how there was only a few minutes of time in which we saw our beloved Spacekru, yet it still felt like there were a lot of answers. For example, who is together, who has broken up. Marper is still a go, wooo! Memori… not so much, and I am actually fine with it. Honestly, does it shock anyone that Emori got sick of Murphy’s space bullshit? Girl is learning a new career path and Murphy’s off brooding in the mess hall or whatever. Pass on that nonsense. I love that Emori is basically Raven’s apprentice, and I am all over her becoming a badass STEM bitch.

Harper was really the one we saw the least about, which… sad. I like Harper. But Monty is at least channeling his space mopiness into hosting his own Top Chef competition, even if okay he is the only one playing. And frankly… Monty has more of a reason to mope, right? Murphy somehow not only cockroachedly survived Praimfaya, but got his (former) beloved safe too. Monty killed his mom twice and watched his best friend/basically surrogate brother die in his arms. Get it together, Murphy.

Spacekru apparently saw the Gagarin right before it departed for Earth, and they’ll be damned if they’re going to miss whatever else Eligius has up there to share, so off they go to see what’s shakin’. Though it’s a scary prospect: They have no fuel, and precious little oxygen, so if this goes bad… well, it won’t end well for our Space Cowpeople. (Only we saw them on the ground and know they’ll be fine, but shhh.) But they start to pack their shit and leave, so I guess we’ll see.

And yes, Becho happened. We all knew it would, but it doesn’t make it any more appealing, does it? Especially since it’s trying to be all… tender and cute? Could I have bought Becho having some kind of passion-filled, angsty sexual relationship? Hell yes. Can I really buy Echo fretting over Thanksgiving dinner with the Blakes? So much nope.

Meet the Neighbors

Must we with these new people? I say that every time there is a new character, and then I end up sobbing when they’re inevitably offed. (Looking at you again, Roan.) But look, these assholes did not come looking for a Welcome Wagon, because they already are calling Earth “our planet” which… getting ahead of yourselves, aren’t you? It’s been destroyed twice since you’ve set foot on it, I think you lost this round of Finders Keepers.

Fine, she made me laugh, maybe she can stay for a minute.

I kind of like Zeke though, mostly because he seems less violent? Charmaine appears to be a total badass, and a good leader, but I obviously trust her zero percent. And anyone whose nickname is Graveyard has to be bad news, right? So of course, first thing they do is try to kill Madi, because why wouldn’t you just storm onto a planet and try to kill the young people living there? So Madi and Clarke beat them to it.

Sure Clarke didn’t have to kill that guy. Hell, maybe she shouldn’t have. Because obviously now Gagarin is going to be pissed. But… meh, they were probably going to be pissed anyway, and I didn’t care about that guy, and now I don’t even have to learn his name. Win-win.

A Quick Look at Hell the Bunker

What in the actual fuck is going on in there? Clearly Octavia has had to… cull the population. Through this gladiator-style tournament of death and awfulness, it seems. And I knew it would be dark… but wow. She looks next-level intense in the seconds-long clip that we saw in the bunker. And really, by “intense”, I mean, “holy shit, Octavia’s lost her damn mind”. Look, I get why it started. Grounders are not going to just say “okay, we’ll go into the oxygen-deprived room and die” because they’re Grounders. They need a “good death” or whatever, and so O gives them that option (my theory, anyway). But I assume that this will cross all kinds of lines, and the rules will get blurred in a damn hurry. Plus, I wonder how Skaikru is going to participate since they are mostly comprised of kids, old people, and science nerds? But I do think that Red Queen is going to give us a ton of insight, so hang on for that ride!

Hell, I’m scared.

 Episode 5×02: Red Queen

This episode looks so epic I don’t even know what to say. I cannot wait to get into the bunker and see all the blood and awfulness, and if that’s wrong I don’t want to be right. There’s also a Kabby preview online but I am being strong and resisting.

What did you think of the Season 5 premiere? Are you as in love as I am? Mad about Becho? Happy to see Emori in grad school? Let’s talk!

  1. Yes! This was an AWESOME premiere! Worth the wait. 🙂 Well kinda. That wait was horrible. But anyway… Clarke having to give up and leave the bunker behind was tough. And the visual of her traveling across the dried up lakebed or ocean, whatever- I mean I’m assuming the WHOLE ocean hasn’t dried up but it appears that it has close to shore anyway?? And it was a really powerful moment when she lost it, because yeah- to think she might be the only one left would be awful.

I didn’t really like her moment of almost suicide though. Of course the bird shows up RIGHT before she did it. But otherwise… no complaints. Oh and Madi’s appearance was kinda creepy no?

I love that Emori is all STEM now. We need more Harper though, agree. They could pull a Walking dead and give us an all Harper episode. I wouldn’t complain. Or Marper… that’d be fine too. Monty’s apron WAS the best.

Clarke… dang. Clearly the message is don’t fuck with Madi!

Octavia… I feel like she puts on blood the way some people put on makeup. You know, get ready for your day, kill someone and be sprayed with blood.

    • HA seriously, the wait was probably the worst wait for any kind of media ever. I agree, the part in Polis WAS tough, especially since she knew it’d be at least 5 years, I cannot even imagine. And she and Madi must have gone back and tried again, because she said to Bellamy “We tried to get them out”, ugh. I think you’re right about the water- I am sure ALL the oceans didn’t dry up, but definitely a big piece- since she said she didn’t have to swim to the shore, we can assume she walked.

I actually agree about the almost-suicide. I mean, it DOES make sense, who wouldn’t have felt the same, but the bird thing was WAY too easy of an out, so they probably just should have scrapped it altogether. GAH yes Madi was SO CREEPY. She looked like an orphan from a Charles Dickens book or something hahah. Which, I guess isn’t far off!

Emori might be my new fave! Definitely more Harper/Marper time is needed. I think that maybe because they weren’t as dramatic as everyone else, they got less time in this episode? I don’t think we’ll ever get a whole episode of Harper, sorry hahah.

YEP I think you’re right about the Madi thing- that was a pretty good way of setting that up for the rest of the season. I still don’t really feel like it’s a mother-daughter thing though? It didn’t feel maternal to me, more like big sister?

HA so, so true about Octavia! Everyone else gets their warpaint on, O gets her blood smeared juuuuust right. Everything about O and the damn bunker just looks terrifying.

      • Can you imagine trying to dig under there and not being able to? Especially with her mom and just about everyone she knows/ loves down there, ahd she doesn’t know if they’re just trapped or dead? Yeesh.

Madi was freaky! Just standing there all shadowed… damn, kid.

Emori has definite possibilities! It’s amazing how getting her away f/ Murph and giving her something to do (besides thieving) immediately makes her more interesting!

        Agreed.

Yup. I used to think Echo looked badass in her warpaint but O has her beat. Blood trumps paint for sure.

        • Um NO, that would be an actual nightmare. I think the worst part is that she doesn’t even know if they are okay, too- like Abby could be dead in there for all she knows, especially after the 5 year mark passed and she still couldn’t get them out. That had to be downright gutting- I bet we see that this week!

Creepy Madi was fun, I wonder if she stood watching Clarke like that every night when they went to sleep ?

RIGHT? It’s almost sad that the Murphy thing brought her down but.. it really did. And now I am loving her so much! Funny, because before the season started, I thought I’d be okay if she didn’t make it but now NOPE.

HA that is very accurate, blood will always be more badass than paint. Also scarier though, O isn’t going to be making friends that way!

          • Lol about Madi- that kid legit freaked me out. Like a young crazyass Luna FFS. Bear traps and shit…

I felt the same way about Emori… like next whatever. Now… I dunno. I like tech Emori better than thief Emori…

O as total badass is scary, but that clip you sent- showed her a little vulnerable? Which makes her story even sadder, if she has to be ruthless and doesn’t really want to be, but feele she has no choice.

            • YES she looked like the spawn of Luna, no question! The bear trap thing was brutal and badass- I hope Clarke has made her pay hahah.

Tech Emori is WAY better than Thief Emori! Can you imagine the havoc she could wreak!?

Yeah, I agree about O- I was actually really hoping that was the way they’d play it. Because yeah it IS really sad but… it’s also more true to character. I mean, remember her chasing butterflies and shit? That girl is still in there somewhere, but the decisions she’s had to make… well, I think they may destroy her.

  2. Kel

So…I kind of skipped seasons 1-4 and just popped in to watch the season 5 opener. It was interesting. Not sure yet if I’ll keep up with it, but interesting. Your recaps are extremely entertaining though!

  3. Engi

ALL I CAN SAY IS I WAS VERY MAD ABOUT THIS BELLAMY/ECHO THING (they shall not have a ship name) and by the last few crazy Octavia seconds my eyes were glued open and my mouth was wide open. Don’t think I blinked for 3 minutes.
But I need more backstory about why Emori and John..but I’m glad she’s getting along with the rest of the gang and doing productive sciency things.
I LOVE HARPER!!!! I LOVE MONTY!!! (he will be right about everything about the earth ha). I’m glad they’re still together because they are a solid couple and if they had broken up it would be stupid, and sad!
Oh and big Bearded Solid Dad Bellamy is an angel…
Clarke!!!! What. A. Badass. is all I can say. Completely amazing. Dyed her hair red again too! Didn’t that also happen last time before/during bad things were happening? Intense stuff
Wonder what happened to the actress for Madi in the original trailer.
I know that they need action material but man COULD THEY JUST HAVE SOME PEACE ON THE EARTH WITHOUT SOME PSYCHO JAIL PEOPLE COMING AND WAGING ANOTHER WAR AGAIN PLS.

    • UGH right? I feel you. I didn’t want them to be a thing, but I also knew like, 100%, that it was going to happen. But THEN, I had held out hope that it would have been a passing thing and over, and seeing that it is very much NOT over makes me sad. AGREED about Octavia! I was dumbfounded, like what just happened!? I knew it was going to be dark, but WHOA, that was next-level dark!

I think we’ll see some Emori and Murphy flashbacks for sure- especially since it was clear that it did NOT end amicably!

SAME, I am sooooo glad that Marper made it! Monty needs her honestly, like how could he have lost any MORE people?! I am glad they didn’t do that to him. He WILL be right about the earth hahah. And yessss I love Bellamy so much, I just wish I didn’t have to see him canoodling with Echo, blehhh.

Ooooh yes, you are right about Clarke, when she was Wanheda, she dyed her hair- that’s a fun comparison! She was so amazing in this episode, it was really powerful!

I think I heard that the first Madi got some other job?

Ughhhh right? I need a FEW lighter moments, like in Wanheda 1 with the Rover scene!? Hopefully there will be *some* of that, just a scene or two, before they have to go fight another war, ugh. Why can’t anyone non-evil come to Earth? Nope, has to be murdery prisoners!

  4. The scene where Clarke holds jasper’s goggles was so powerful. ?? Also, I understand that Monty isn’t too happy about going back to a place that took him his beloved ones. ? They are the things that really broke my heart in that episode.

Yeah, the sweet dynamic between Bellamy and Echo is not what I picture, totally ” bizarre! ”

I cannot wait for Bellamy to see that Clarke is safe and sound ( well, as much as safe and sound is on earth post-Praimfaya ), ? and what in heaven happened to Octavia in that bunker, she’s far from the girl that chased butterflies!

    • GAH right!? That scene KILLED me. Especially because Clarke was so, so upset by it. I was thinking, she and Jasper parted ways on a not-so-great note, and now she has no chance to make amends. And yep, poor Monty, he’s been through SO much, and he’s just such a precious cinnamon roll!

YESSS I am glad you agree- their dynamic was creepy! I half expected them to start talking in baby talk with cutesy names ? Part of me is so salty because even though I expected it… I hate it, and I hate hating anything on this show!

GAH yesss that reunion is going to be SO EPIC. And I can already see Echo shooting daggers at Clarke hah. Poor O, I think her story is going to completely wreck us, honestly. Because somewhere in her IS that girl chasing butterflies, but she’s had to turn into… well, whatever the hell we just saw! I am so scared and so excited for Red Queen tomorrow!!

  5. OMG I totally agree with you! When I first started watching Eden I was hesitant when I realized that we would be getting an episode of mostly just Clarke alone. But the show totally pulled it off! Normally I get so bored with those type of scenes so I was pleasantly surprised!

Ugh, when is Bellarke going to finally be a thing? Because I need it to be a thing! I’m so not for the whole Becho ship, and Im scared now because it seems like a genuine emotionally invested relationship on both sides? Noooo. Haha, loved reading your recap it never fails to make me laugh or make me squeal with all the feels!

    • RIGHT!??! How the heck did they even!? I love this show so much. Stuff that would have crashed and burned on other shows somehow are awesome on this one!

Bellarke, if we are lucky, will be a thing in say, the last couple episodes of the series. I actually think that the only way we *will* get Bellarke is if Jason ends it on his own terms- if The CW cancels it, he won’t have had time to make it happen. So… cross your fingers for a renewal! I agree, it DOES seem like both Becho parties are invested. She’s going to have to die, basically. Sorry, Echo.

AWWW thank you SO MUCH, that is so nice of you!!
