An insightful, supportive and creative journal for anyone who can't turn off their restless minds when the lights go out

An engaging and emotionally aware resource for night owls, insomniacs, and anyone else who finds themselves awake at all hours, The Nocturnal Journal will help you explore what keeps you up at night, and why.

Prompts and illustrations tease out the pressing thoughts, deep questions, everyday anxieties, and half-formed creative ideas that need unpacking and exploring, bringing more peace of mind and a richer understanding of ourselves.

Oh hello there, my lovelies! This is a… kind of review. Because how exactly does one review a journal about their deepest thoughts in the middle of the night?

You don’t. But I’ll be damned if this isn’t the perfect book for me. In case you’re new, here’s a spoiler: I am rubbish at sleeping. Part of it is because I am just a night owl by nature (this blog didn’t just get its title from Catching Fire– it’s literal, too!), but the other part is because I constantly have all the things on my mind.

When I can’t sleep at night, incidentally, this song is always, always in my head, and has been since high school:

Anyyyyway. So at first, I thought about filling it out before sharing. But… like I said, it’s pretty deep and personal. And this is coming from someone who’s quite open. That said, I think it is basically perfect for getting some of your deepest thoughts out of your head- and maybe can even make you realize that you’ve got something on your mind.

And some of the activities are just plain fun! There’s one akin to a magic 8 ball without… you know, the bubbly blue crap that makes your ball not work after a few shakes?

I read through all the activities, and I won’t lie, some of them will be a challenge- but in a good way. I am a huge proponent of self-reflection, and this journal is an adorable way to do it. Oh, and did I mention that it glows in the dark? Because it does. I can’t exactly get a picture of it doing so, sadly, but alas.

Fun fact: I had to pretend to write left-handed because I couldn’t take the damn picture with my useless left hand.

And now, after I have read too late, spent too much time blogging, and watched Netflix far longer than I should have, when I am finally willing to go to sleep but unable, I’ll have a new activity!

It’s me, the book’s question about ghosts of my past, and my bedtime pal Pickles the penguin. Zero shame that I am a grown ass adult who sleeps with a stuffed penguin.

Do you have trouble sleeping? Are you a night owl like me, or one of those reasonable humans who goes to bed early?

  1. Ooh this is fun! I’m totally a night owl. This is seriously a neat idea, because who doesn’t have awesome thoughts at night? The whole having a great idea while in bed trying to sleep, and forgetting it the next day! Bam problem solved. 🙂

Nice that it glows in the dark. This looks awesome (and totally good for self- reflection too).

  2. How fun and functional. I have so many thoughts that race through my head at night. I’ll be super sleepy, turn out the light, and Bam! wide awake and my brain is humming. I keep a pad and pen by my bed to scribble down those great ideas and review quotes that pop in and out of my head.

  3. This book sounds really cool. I’m not a night owl, but I used to have lots of trouble sleeping. I don’t anymore because the doctor gave me pills for that. Whenever the pills don’t work, I end up reading all night. This book would probably be perfect for those nights. Also, it glows in the dark? That’s the best thing ever!

  4. Wow this looks like such a fun book! I’m definitely not a night owl, but I would still love to get it cuz it sounds so fun.(and it glows in the dark? like wow I love that)

This looks really interesting! I don’t usually have a real problem getting to sleep (just forcing myself to actually go to bed), and I’m afraid I might actually stay up later on accident if I used this. It looks kind of fun! And I like to complete things so I feel productive. I hope you find it enjoyable and helpful!

  6. I was treated for insomnia for over 15 years, but since getting a new job, I sleep a solid 5 hours every night (this is an accomplishment). The journal looks fun though, and cute pjs.

  7. I love all kinds of journals and like…these types of things, but I never end up filling them out? What are the chances you didn’t actually fill this out and I can steal this from you?

  8. Um, how has it been this long and I never knew the blog title is a nod to Catching Fire? I just always thought it was your night owl tendencies. Learned something new today!

The fact that the book glows in the dark makes me all kinds of happy. That is epic.

I guess I am one of those obnoxious people who goes to bed early (9 pm virtually every night) and rarely has sleep issues. Lay down, close eyes, go to sleep. Simple, right? LOL

  9. I’m not someone who struggles to sleep most of the time but one of my friends is a crazy insomniac and I am totally gifting this to her. She will love it as a great way to try and pass the time. And it glows in the dark! I so have to get this, it is just so damn awesome.

  10. I go to bed early. I usually don’t have trouble sleeping unless I’m sick or have a headache. I’m an adult and I sleep with two stuffed bears.
