Former Debut

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is: Top Ten Debut Authors Who Have Me Looking Forward To Their Sophomore Novel (because when you love a debut you just are ITCHING to get your hands on the author’s second book) or Top Ten Sophomore Novels That I Loved Just As Much If Not More As The Author’s Debut (no one hit wonders heeeere!)

I had to cut this list way down, because there are so many epic debut authors whose sophomore books I simply cannot wait for. So I tried to not use super recent debuts since a lot of them don’t have known second books yet. But I broke my own rules on all of these basically, because I like to do that. Also, these (with the one pesky exception of not having read the book) were all rated at least 4+ stars from me!

Pictures link to authors’ Goodreads pages!

Louise O’Neill has the distinction of being the only author on this list whose second book is actually out. But since it isn’t out in the US, I am letting it go. Even though I will be reading it ASAP, and so should you.

0p

So, so soon now. And someone, maybe a cover? Because I assume beauty and magic will be a part of it.

0q

The second book sounds almost more amazing than the first, which is exciting, and how is it even possible? Such a win!

0o

Rites of Passage sequel, anyone?

0m

Stacey Lee happens to be the only author whose debut I haven’t actually read yet. But I will. I must. And I need the next book(s), for there are two of them.

0u

Kim just went to Spain for research. For Book 2 of Blood and Salt. I am only completely jealous.

0s

More Denton! Which reminds me, I need to request this book ASAP.

0r

I cannot actually stand the wait. I loved The Sin Eater’s Daughter so much!

0t

Minnow Bly was creepy as hell. This one is title The Arsonist. Need we say more?

0w

Don’t Touch spoke to my soul. I need more!

0y

Don’t worry, The Rose and the Dagger has been pre ordered! (And while this isn’t technically Renée’s debut, it’s widely considered such, so we’re going with it, ‘kay?)

So, any of these debuts that you cannot wait for sophomore novels from? Any that I forgot? Because I assume I will be kicking myself for forgetting someone after reading everyone’s lists!

  1. I *really* want to read ‘Don’t Touch’ and hear “Wrath and Dawn” is amazing. Fun list – and I really like how you put it together. 🙂

  2. I hope you enjoy reading Under the Painted Sky. It’s one of my favorite reads of the year. Also, yes to Kim’s upcoming novels. I LOVED Blood and Salt and I cannot wait to get my hands on The Last Harvest and the second book in the Blood and Salt duology. I still need to read Rites of Passage. I will read it and when I do, I will thank you a million times for encouraging me to read it.

  3. I haven’t read any of the first books on your list, but not for lack of wanting to. I’ve been curious about Stacy Lee and Ahdieh’s Wrath and the Dawn has been on my wish list for awhile now. Stephanie Oakes is another author I want to read at some point. Great list!

  4. Great list, Shannon! I have both of Louise O’Neill’s books on my kindle – I’m going to get to them at some point, even though I know they’re both probably going to make me sad and angry and frustrated. I’ve heard great things, though!

    • Aw thanks!! And yes, they will make you all those things, but in a way that will make you want to change the damn world. Only Ever Yours is so powerful. I can’t even say that I hope you enjoy it, because you won’t enjoy it, but you NEED to read it!

  5. I have both of Louise O’Neill’s in my towering TBR pile, I’m really hoping to them soon! I enjoyed The Sin Eater’s Daughter but I didn’t love it, however I am really looking forward to The Sleeping Prince! Great list. 😀

    • Thanks! Louise O’Neill is basically a genius IMO. I don’t know how she does it, but there is just something so special about her writing. And I will fully admit to loving The Sin Eater’s Daughter, though I know it wasn’t everyone’s favorite 😉 Hope you enjoy the ones you plan on readinG!

  6. It isn’t really that surprising, but there are four names on your list that also made mine: Louise O’Neill, Sabaa Tahir, Adam Silvera and Stephanie Oakes. I am SO EXCITED to read all of their sequels. And I really need to read Wrath of the Dawn and Don’t Touch.

  7. Adorable graphics!! I’m still on the fence if I want to continue on with Denton. I didn’t love the first book, but it just started to get good at the end!!! I also really want to read More Happy Than Not. It’s been on a lot of lists this week and it reminds me how much I need to read it. Great list!

    • I am sad to say that after this post was published, I found out that Denton won’t be releasing this spring after all. Perhaps 2017 🙁 But if you do read it (hell, if any of us get to read it) I hope you enjoy it more! Thanks so much!! 😀

I haven’t read so many of these! Definitely authors/books I need to check out soon. Is there going to be a list of debuts you enjoyed? (or has there been one? I tried looking for one, but didn’t really get anything).

    • Well, I did enjoy all of these debuts very much! Some others that *almost* made the cut for me (and didn’t just due to how new they were!) were: Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything; Moira Fowley-Doyle’s The Accident Season; Jackie Lea Sommers’ Truest… well there are a LOT. I think there is actually a post coming up about debuts- like favorites from the year, probably in about a month. And I will have LOTS to add! 😀

  9. YES to Joy N. Helsey, Stacey Lee and Kim Liggett! Kim Liggett’s book from Tor sounds AMAZING! I needs in my life! The rest, sadly I haven’t read or didn’t care for (*cough*The Wrath*cough*)!
I died at the My Little Pony graphics! You must be a riot to hang out with IRL. Quick, give me your address! We need to be BFFs! 🙂

    • I shall now plaster my address on the internet! We should absolutely be BFFs. I live in Pennsylvania, come on over 😉 Thank you though, you pretty much made my day 😀

So I take it you won’t be reading Wrath’s sequel 😉 I jest, I jest. I am so excited for the 3 that you are though- and Joy did say on Twitter that things were slowly happening, so there is hope!!

  10. OMG! I literally have seen The Wrath and the Dawn in every single list today and I still haven’t read. I’m going to this month though, I have great hopes for that book!
Great list, I loved the graphics 🙂 Please check out mine when you get the chance 🙂

  11. Great list. You have a few books on here that I have read and enjoyed myself. I think I am also going to have to add a few of these to my Christmas wishlist, it looks like I have missed out on some great debuts recently. I am especially excited to read An Ember in the Ashes, I have heard so many good things about that one. Here’s my TTT.

  12. Omggg I didn’t even know Stephanie Oakes had another book coming. THIS POST HAS MADE MY DAY, SHANNON. OMGGGGGG. I loved Minnow Bly so much. And by “loved” I mean, I was completely traumatised. #bestbookeverclearly And I’m still deciding whether I want to read the second Ember in the Ashes book. >_< BUT I WANT DENTON'S. That first book was ridiculous. I snorted and cackled so much my dog got angry at the noise and left. (He's a delicate soul.)

I'm dyyyyying for Amy Zhang's next book!! HOW IS SHE SO YOUNG AND SO TALENTED, THO? OMG.

  13. Your list is AMAZING, Shannon. I want so many books from this list. GAH *gets all grabby hands*

I am dyinggg to read A Torch Against the Night especially since An Ember in the Ashes left off on such an intense note. I ADORED More Happy Than Not so I am really excited to read History is All You Left Me! I hope it’ll blow my mind the same way that More Happy Than Not did! I just hope it won’t tear my heart apart in the same way! AND YES TO A RITES OF PASSAGE SEQUEL. I think my body was born ready for that sequel. TBH though, I don’t care what her next book is, I JUST WANT THE AUTHOR TO WRITE MORE. Under the Painted Sky is one of my fav books from this year so i am dying just a teeny weensy bit to read Outrun the Moon. Plus the cover on that book. *swoons*

  14. OUTRUN THE MOON & THE LAST HARVEST YASSSS. I’m mega obsessed with The Last Harvest’s concept and it kinda makes me laugh a little with all the crazy. Plus, Outrun The Moon has a GORGEOUS cover. Have you heard the synopsis for Stacey’s third novel, Touch Me Not? LITERALLY THE COOLEST. I was infatuated by Adam’s debut, so I think I definitely have to add his next book to my already-overflowing TBR as well!

  15. I totally need The Rose and the Dagger IMMEDIATELY! I loved The Wrath and the Dawn to pieces.
I am also looking forward to Maggie Hall’s sequel to The Conspiracy of Us.
    Thanks for sharing!

  16. I NEEEED Adam Silvera’s next book. Seriously. I just recently read More Happy Than Not so it’s not even like I’ve been waiting that long, but still. It was amazing. Adam is an amazing writer. I need more!

    -Lauren

  17. MAN THAT COVER FOR THE SLEEPING PRINCE LOOKS BRILLIANT. and I loved Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly, so I’m looking forward to any sequel! I can’t wait to read the sequel to Ember as well! There are so many wonderful debut authors and books here, thanks for the round up Shannon.

  18. It’s shocking to me how many of these I have yet to read. 🙁 I totally agree with Hensley – Rites of Passage was incredible!! Now I have to go check out these books. I feel my TBR growing right before my eyes!! LOL

  19. unfortunately looking at the authors goodreads response it doesn’t not look like there will be a Rites of Passage sequel but I hope whatever she chooses to write next will be as equally wonderful!

  20. I need TRATD SO BAD!! I need more Khalid in my life. And Persian food. And gorgeous descriptions. And feisty Shazi. Under a Painted Sky is AMAZING, I have Outrun the Moon, and I’m stoked to read it 😀 A Torch Against The Night must come to me now. I have intense need for that book. Eeek I still gotta read Kim’s book. I heard great things about it 🙂
