From Goodreads:

In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary’s own brother. Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell. The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris – but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons? When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee – even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned… Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the word in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!

I’m going to be honest here, I wasn’t super eager to read this one. I didn’t know how exactly 725 more pages of this same group of people would be possible, really. Didn’t we kind of cover it all already? Who loved who, who fought who, who was good, who was evil, who was and was not related to who… It really seemed like this group had run out of steam.
Sorrynotsorry.

I actually read this book quicker than I’d thought I would. I must say that it moved pretty fast, despite the length and general repetitive nature. I’m going to just break this down into some likes and dislikes.

Likes:
  • The Supporting Characters. I have always loved Simon, and Magnus is so fun. Even though I was annoyed that some characters were introduced just to gain interest for the next series, I was glad that there were some new people around.
  • I enjoyed the ending. I probably shouldn’t have as much as I did, but I did. It wasn’t creative, or even particularly exciting, but I liked it.
  • There were a few really sweet life-lesson-type moments that I really enjoyed.
  • There were also a few (not a ton, but a few) scenes that left me with a pretty solid amount of feels.
Dislikes:
  • Didn’t I read this one already?  Sebastian. Clary and Jace are just soooo in love. Vampires. Werewolves. Parents only mildly involved. Runes. Portals. Yep, definitely read it already. It was boring then, and it is boring now.
  • There were a lot of convenient moments. As in pretty much all of them.
  • I kind of have no idea why Jace and Clary are in love. Actually, why any of the couples are in love. It’s just like, “oh, blah-blah loves so-and-so”, and I’m just supposed to accept that without any evidence. Great plan.
  • There were so many characters. Seriously, there were names being thrown at me that I couldn’t have told you the significance of if my life freaking depended on it. These weren’t even actual necessary characters in most cases, more like fillers (or God forbid, another spin-off?) but they threw me off, because I had to spend time trying to figure out if they were important enough for me to worry about remembering who the hell they were.
  • Not much actually happened, considering there were 725 pages. It just wasn’t interesting to me at all, seemed drawn out, and mainly unnecessary.
Bottom Line: There were good moments. I was glad I read the whole book. But I would be lying if I rated it any higher. And if I didn’t have legit OCD issues with stopping a series midway, I probably never would have made it past book three. So sure, read it if you’re invested in the series, it is a nice enough farewell. But in the grand scheme of books? Pass.

So You Own 3,163 pages of Mortal Instruments. What do you do now?
I own all of these. They’re really big and heavy. For some reason, the font is huge in this last one, or at least it seemed so to me. I felt like I was reading one of the special “large print” books we used to get my grandma. In case you’re wondering, yes, that is the actual page count in this series. I calculated it, just for you. I considered my options for this series, in terms of my possession of it. I know I won’t be rereading, so what’s a girl to do? At this point, bookshelf space is starting to become a premium commodity. Between these and the Sookie Stackhouse marathon, some books need to find new homes/purposes. Stat.
  • Option 1: Build a fort. Forts are awesome, right?

  • Option 2: Weapons for the zombie apocalypse. This one is pretty obvious. One good blow to the brain with one of these bad boys, and you’ve just solved a zombie problem.
  • Option 3: Use as a step stool. (No one said that these ideas were practical or safe.)
  • Option 4. Weigh down loose objects on a windy day.
So, have you read this series (either all or some)? Plan on it? Let’s talk about it! And hey- what would you do with 3,163 pages of book?

  1. I have to say I really enjoyed this review especially the what to do with 3,163 pages part! I have a sort of love/hate relationship with this series, I read the first three when I was 14(?) and I loved it at first but was less than thrilled when I learned that more were coming out. Since then I’ve gone from excited to read them again(when I read book four), to I’m over it(when I tried to read the prequels), to I need to get back into this series(when the movie came out), to meh it could go either way(when this book came out). So yeah, I have very mixed feelings when it comes to this series and I may or may not eventually finish reading it, though I admit the length of this one does not make me want to get to it any faster. =)

    • Aw thanks! Yes, I was the same way! I liked it, and then I cared less and less. I mean, I always have to finish stuff, so I finished, but I don’t think you’d be blown away or anything by it.

  2. Bahaha, the “What to do with 3,163 pages” part was brilliant! I loved it! I haven’t read TMI. I did however start The Infernal Devices and..well…let’s just say things didn’t go as I’d hoped. It started out good and then it went downhill. I was hoping this series would be better. Now I’m worried 🙁 I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it.

    • Aw thanks 🙂 I have The Infernal Devices, but I am just so over it I don’t know if I will ever read them. Maybe someday? From what I’ve heard, most people seem to like TID better than TMI, so I don’t know… but I hope it’ll be better for you!

  3. This series had so many ups and downs for me. After CoFA I was so close to just giving up on it because is was just all of the same and it just dragged on and I just didn’t care for the characters anymore accept for Simon and Isabelle. But then I decided to just get the last two books, read them and be done with this series. Like you, I definitely thought that CoHF wasn’t mindblowing by any means but it was a solid conclusion to the series. It had its moments and I just tried to enjoy it for what it is. This series was more of a guilty pleasure read for me. I will most definitely never reread those books because I could never ever get through CoFA again. I think your review really pointed out all the problems I have with TMI overall but this was one of my first YA series I read so it will always have a special place in my heart 🙂 Also, the ‘What to do now?’ part was hilarious 😀 Great review! 🙂

    • Yes, that is exactly how I looked at it! I felt like “well, I made it this far, might as well see it through”. Only I didn’t realize I was in for over 1200 more pages of the same exact stuff I just read! And yes, it was one of the first YA series I read too, which I think was part of my compulsion to finish. I am sure someone will want to read them someday, I just have to find a willing victim 😉

  4. I’ve only read the first three of this series. I really enjoyed them, felt like it was a solid ending… and then… she decides to carry on? I haven’t read on, yet. I haven’t actually decided if I even want to. We’ll see.

As far as what to do with them? My kids would love it if I built a fort of of them… and they certainly are big enough. However, it’s always good to be prepared for the Zombocalypse. The step stool is probably just too unsteady for me. 🙁 lol But, if you want to know what I’d really do, practically, I’d give them away somehow. I use the YA Book Exchange site a lot. It’s pretty awesome for weeding out your own collection *and* getting other ones you want to read.

    • Yes! It was unnecessary at best. I would just pretend the others didn’t exist if I were you 😉

I do plan on giving them away most likely. I am going to be doing a big giveaway for my blogoversary in a few weeks, and I was thinking of giving them away then, but the cost of shipping would be insane. I seriously think it might be cheaper to buy someone new copies lol. And I wonder if my kids would ever want to read them (which is the reason I keep most of the books I haven’t loved, on the off chance they will someday!). Maybe one of those flat-rate boxes could work!

  5. I’ve read the entire thing. I liked the last book, but you made some good points. I never really felt the romance between Clary and Jace in this book and I was rather over their characters. The Emma parts were fine, but they felt like they belonged in another book. Magnus needs his own book and not just that short story compilation, which was only just okay overall. Have you read Infernal Devices? I’m not a huge fan of the romance, but those books are really good.
