Waiting on Wednesday: How We Fall by Kate Brauning

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Breaking the Spine, which spotlights upcoming releases that we simply cannot wait for! This week, I chose How We Fall by Kate Brauning.

Amazon

Goodreads

Hardcover: 304 pages

Publisher: Merit Press (November 3, 2014)

Synopsis:

He kissed her on a dare. She told him to do it again. Ever since Jackie moved to her uncle’s sleepy farming town, she’s been flirting—a bit too much—with her cousin, Marcus. She pushes away the inevitable consequences of their friendship until her best friend, Ellie, disappears, and the police suspect foul play. Just when she needs him most, Marcus falls for the new girl in town—forcing Jackie to give a name to the secret summer hours she’s spent with him. As she watches the mystery around Ellie’s disappearance start to break, Jackie has to face that she’s fallen in love at an impossible time with an impossible boy. And she can’t let Marcus, or Ellie, go.

Why I’m Waiting: First, I loved this cover the minute I laid eyes on it. I almost didn’t even care what it was about, because I needed that cover. But then I read the synopsis. And whoa. Really, cousin-love? Yep. (Incidentally, the author answers the “why?” question here.) I love a book that pushes the envelope, and a book that will generate a lot of discussion, and I think this one could. And honestly, I am downright intrigued at how this will all happen, and, add in a mystery on top of it, and I am in.

What are you waiting for this Wednesday? And, since I am curious, do you think you can handle the cousin-love topic in a book?

  1. The cover is definitely eye catching! The first time I saw it, I thought it was a mystery book because of a random bracelet floating around. Anyways, I can’t wait to read this one mainly because of the cousin-love thing! The author gave me a copy and I’m super excited!!!

  2. Wow, this sounds interesting, I love that cover and honestly the cousin love thing alone intrigues me, I’m interested to see how the author handles this! Also I’m always up for a good mystery. =)

  3. I was debating between this and my current choice for my WoW pick this week and went with my choice. I’m curious about the whole relationship with the cousin thing. I know it’s not as popular in the US, but cousin marriage is legal and encouraged in a few parts of the world! I’m excited to see how the author handles it all.
    Great pick! 🙂

  4. Okay, yeah, wasn’t expecting that. It’ll be interesting to see how it’s done and handled. It’s also less creepy if she never grew up with her cousin, you know? There’s a big difference between someone whose related and you’ve never met, to someone you’re related to and have grown up with. Same with stepsiblings, which I never get the whole issue with that, since you know, their not related blood…

    • Yes! That is what I was thinking too. Plus, genetically, it isn’t really an increased risk (I watched a Dr. Phil about it once lol), and in the past it was so common. I totally agree about stepsiblings, especially if they didn’t grow up together.
