Inception meets The Magicians in the most imaginative YA debut of the year!

All Kane Montgomery knows for certain is that the police found him half-dead in the river. He can’t remember how he got there, what happened after, and why his life seems so different now. And it’s not just Kane who’s different, the world feels off, reality itself seems different.

As Kane pieces together clues, three almost-strangers claim to be his friends and the only people who can truly tell him what’s going on. But as he and the others are dragged into unimaginable worlds that materialize out of nowhere—the gym warps into a subterranean temple, a historical home nearby blooms into a Victorian romance rife with scandal and sorcery—Kane realizes that nothing in his life is an accident. And when a sinister force threatens to alter reality for good, they will have to do everything they can to stop it before it unravels everything they know.

This wildly imaginative debut explores what happens when the secret worlds that people hide within themselves come to light.

Where even to begin here? The bonkers dream worlds? The secrets and mysteries? The reviews dubbing it “very very gay?” Actual sorcery? The cover that is beyond lovely? Honestly just take your pick of any of the above reasons that guarantee you’re going to need to try to win yourself a copy of this one!

I read this one through NetGalley, and now I need to buy a physical copy because it was awesome! My tagline would be “Puts queer characters front and center as heroes and villains”.

  2. I am excited to read this based entirely on the author’s twitter account! Last night i had some weird dream involving getting stuck in a country because I couldn’t find my passport when I was supposed to leave, and no, I really would prefer NOT to have that happen!

  3. I am seeing some VERY good reviews for this one. And the altered reality stuff sounds fun of course. As for bonkers dreams, I’ve had a few doozies lately- i know one was a very weird post apoc thing- but as usual I forgot it after I woke up. Dang it! I feel like some of these I should write down lol. Or maybe watch less weird shows.

I won a copy of this off Goodreads and it feels like SUCH a perfect January read. I can’t wait to see what you thought of it! I don’t generally remember my dreams, since getting sick, but I know when I was younger I had epic ones, and my mom and I would compare ours on weekend mornings- we both had some outrageous and bizarre ones.
