Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is: Top Ten Hyped Books I’ve Never Read

I feel like we did something similar to this not too long ago, so I am going to do this a little interactively. There will be 10 books. There will be a poll. Extra point for anyone who can tell me WHY I should read said book. At the end of the week, I will announce which book had the most votes and then? I promise to read it by the end of July and let you know what I think. Let’s spice up this TTT!

Also, in 140 characters or less, Twitter style, I am going to tell you why I haven’t read said book. Pictures= Goodreads.

  1. Wow that was a hard choice!! I mean The Raven Boys!! It’s so hyped… but that series really is so well written. And I love Anna and the French Kiss. But I also am anxious to read Illuminae. And it has such buzz about it. BEA definitely promoted the hell out of that book. I’m excited to see what gets picked 🙂

    • The pubs like, sold their souls to the BEA gods for Illuminae. For real 😉 So far, Raven Boys are winning by kind of a lot! I am a little surprised actually- I knew people loved it, but I didn’t know they loved it THAT much!

  2. Wow. That was a hard choice to vote for. I haven’t read a lot of the books on your list. Red Rising made my list. I’m just not sure that I want to read it! If you do, I shall look out for your review!

  3. So, at first my vote was going to Daughter of Smoke and Bone (which you absolutely should read anyway), but when I got to These Broken Stars, my heart stopped. You haven’t read it yet? What the what!!? Seriously, you need to. You have to meet Tarver, he’s awesome. Plus, the story is crazy good and the plot twists will make you scream. The main characters, Tarver and Lilac, are the stars of this book, but their story crosses into the next book, which has two different (and still amazing) main characters. I can’t wait until I can get my hands on the third and final book in December (fingers crossed for sooner) and you should totally hop on this bandwagon, too. At least read it before Illuminae.

    Michelle @ Michelle’s Minions

    • I will! I actually REALLY want to read it before December, mostly because I am terrified that if I don’t read them by the time the last book comes out, I will start to hear spoilers! So hopefully I WILL be able to get to both books before that! (And my fingers are crossed that you get it before December too 😉 )

  4. Bahaha I loved your twitter style reasons. The thickness factor is also a huge reason as to why I haven’t read Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot on Twitter about The Raven Cycle series and I feel so left out. I want to know what I am missing. I THOUGHT IT WAS ABOUT BIRD PEOPLE TOO!! “The Raven Boys” with a raven on the cover … It’s an honest mistake! 😉

    • YEP- big books are SCARY. I am so glad I am not the only one who thought it was about bird people! i thought maybe some boy talked to Ravens? To be honest, I STILL don’t know what it’s about, but I know people ship some of the characters, and I doubt they’d have interspecies ships 😉

  5. You make it so hard to vote Shannon! Out of all of these, I think you have the most chance to enjoy These Broken Stars, especially if you don’t have a reason not to read it. I seriously LOVED it.

  6. “I legit thought it was about bird people” made me snort so hard because I thought the same thing! Anyway, I would definitely recommend Daughter of Smoke and Bone. It’s really different and unique, but the writing is extraordinary!

  7. ‘I thought it was about bird people’. Ahahahaha, Shannon that made my day!

The Raven Boys and Anna and the French Kiss made my list, too. I’m reading Uprooted at the moment and enjoying it so far, and The Book Thief is just beautiful. Yes, it will give you all the feels, but it’s so worth reading, though I think the narrator takes a little getting used to!

    • This is good to know about the narrator! I don’t think anyone has warned me about that before, so I am glad I know this going in. And I bet since you are IN the UK, you have the gorgeous edition of Uprooted, no? I drool. I cannot wait to hear what you think of it!

  8. So I voted for the Raven Boys OF COURSE. DUH SHANNON YOU NEED TO READ IT. IT’S NOT ABOUT BIRD PEOPLE (although a bird does come in later) IT’S ABOUT PSYCHICS AND CARS AND ADORABLE BOYS AND YOGURT. There is literally no downside…except it’s maybe a little slow?? But pfft. It’s so amazingly written that it doesn’t matter.
    YEAH I’M BIASED. NOT ASHAMED.
Also, erk, your worries for Daughter of Smoke and Bone are pretty much 100% spot on. I loved the first book but I couldn’t stand the next two. It was like swallowing a piece of purple prose. LIKE SO CONFUSING. It was beautiful, but I was only like “Yes this is beautiful but I have no idea what it’s saying”. -_- Awkward for me.
I’m definitely waiting till Illumanae is out because I feel like it’s the kind of book that needs to be eaten in physical form. *nods*

    • I am SHOCKED 😉 No,I am not shocked even a little, I knew you’d vote for that one! I am glad it is about those other things and not birds. I like yogurt.

This makes me even MORE concerned for DoSaB- especially because there is NOTHING worse than hating sequels. Like, actually nothing. It fills me with rage. Actually, I think I am going to write a discussion post ABOUT that rage. I hate when I don’t know what is going on too!

As for Illuminae, I totally agree with NEEDING to read it in its physical form, because there’s apparently lots of cool junk in there? But lucky for me… I HAVE the physical form. And all the cool junk. So… decisions, you know how it is.

P.S.- I am like, 98% sure The Raven Boys is going to win 🙂

  9. I haven’t read any on your list. I really want to learn more about Six of Crows. I want you to read that, and Illuminae actually. I have been looking but I can’t seem to find either on NetGalley or Edelweiss. Hurry up and read it so I can decide if I need to buy these.

    • I don’t think Six of Crows is anywhere yet. BUt I DO think people have eARCs of Illuminae? Though, from what I hear, there are a lot of important pictures that are absent from the eARC (and labeled “TK”) that you may want to wait for the physical version of. I will absolutely let you know! 😀

  10. I LOVE Anna and the French Kiss but it is FLUFF (in the best way ever). So I voted for These Broken Stars – I really enjoyed it. The rest I haven’t read but Red Rising was on my list too. Not good to here it started out boring though!

    • It started out SO boring- but everyone assures me it gets better? I don’t know, I WILL give it another shot though. Some day 😉 It only got ONE vote, so I am not in a hurry 😉 These Broken Stars sounds so, so amazing! I hope I do get to read it soon!

  11. The reason why you should read Vicious is because it is awesome! There are anti-heroes, the writing is great, and it’s action pack! Hopefully, they will make a movie of this one and you should get on the train before they make a movie!

  12. Start with Daughter of Smoke and Bone! Amazing descriptions and world building! I’m reading These Broken Stars and I’m really liking it! Ha ha! I love your reason for The Raven Boys! Pretty sure I initially thought that too!

  13. I JUST SPENT THE HARDEST TIME DECIDING WHICH BOOK TO VOTE FOR. *cries* But I finally settled on The Book Thief because IMO it’s amaaazing, and I’m really curious if it’ll make you tear up like I did hehe. 😉

“I legit thought it was about bird people” BRB, I’m DYING. Haha, omg. But really, I thought so too. *shrug* BUT it’s ahhh-mazing and I had quite the dilemma over which I want to push you towards.

  14. I have to use my comment to tell you to read The Raven Byo! It is amazing — my favorite YA series of all time. It is so beautifully crafted, written, and character driven. Plus, Maggie Stiefvater is AWESOME!

    • Well, you are likely going to be in luck, because The Raven Boys is winning by quite a bit 😀 Everyone LOVES this series, AND Maggie! I am pretty excited to see what all the fuss is about 😉 Also- I LOVE character driven books, so you may have just sealed the deal there!

  15. I’m picking Red Rising because I think you’d like it the most. The very beginning is very different from the rest of the book. Also Daughter of Smoke and Bone isn’t confusing and both Uprooted and Vicious are really really good!

    • Well now I want to read ALL the books. GAH. I am glad to know that Red Rising is different, because well, I didn’t like the beginning 😉 I trust you though, and I WILL read it- I really want to, especially before Morning Star comes out!

  16. IGNORE THE SCARES AND CONFUSES THE DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE IS WORTH IT.

The Raven Boys is so much more than bird people. THE RAVEN BOYS IS EVERYTHING.

No logical reason? Then I hereby recommend These Broken Stars to you because TARVER.

Well… Vicious’s cover IS kind of weird. BUT THE INSIDES ARE BEAUTIFUL.

  17. Okay, some of your reasons seriously made me laugh. 🙂 The only one on your list I’ve read is The Raven Boys. I, uh, knew it was not about bird people (LMAO), but even so… I was not blown away. I kept waiting for stuff to happen and usually it didn’t. Maybe it would have been better if there *were* bird people. I’m with you on Daughter of Smoke & Bone. There’s no denying the awesome reviews but I’m just nervous about it. Probably because I rarely read fantasy and that makes me feel that, like you, I’ll be confused. That’s the one I voted for so if it wins and you read it… I’ll read it, too. 🙂

  18. I have only read Anna and the French Kiss on your list and I loved the series it is romantic but it’s not too fluffy. I haven’t read anything else on your list but there is some I want to read including the raven boys and daughter of smoke and bone.

  19. I voted for These Broken Stars as I recently read it and really enjoyed it. A book that deserves the hype. I also really enjoyed the first two books in the Daughter and Bone series, but I still haven’t read the last book and not really have the urge to. I haven’t read the other ones, although I have heard of most of them. I actually don’t know much about the Raven Boys, for some reason the cover and title never appealed to me, but I heard it’s really good.

    • Oh yay!! That one has been getting a LOT of love! And I feel like a lot of people felt like that with DoSaB- so that makes me hesitant, honestly! And that is EXACTLY how I have been with The Raven Boys, but everyone keeps telling me I HAVE to read it so… looks like I may be 😉

  20. Vicious! I vote for vicious! I love some of the other ie These broken Stars, the Raven boys, and definitely Uprooted but this is Victoria Schwab we are talking about….(drops mic)

  21. Oh my goodness Shannon. You need to read These Broken Stars and Illuminae. They are both absolutely amazing and mind-blowing and beautiful and…I just can’t. You will not regret it – ha.

And I totally feel you about Red Rising. I don’t know what it was, but I just couldn’t get in to the beginning either. 😐 I have a feeling it’ll be one of those books I’ll try again in a few years though and see if my thoughts have changed.

Thanks for sharing and great choices! ♥

    • I will! I mean, maybe not today (have to go with the votes hahha) but SOON. I need to read Illuminae before it comes out AND I want to read TBS before the last book!

And yes, I do want to get to Red Rising before the final book but… who knows. It isn’t likely 😉

  22. naila be

I would recommend you read These Broken Stars first or Daughter of Smoke and Bone or Uprooted
I heard the others are amazing as well (Raven Boys, Vicious, Book Thief) but these are the ones that I feel really glad to have read

  23. Daughter of Smoke and Bone- They are huge, but they are so good it flies by. And Laini is an amazing storyteller, and very good at explaining everything that goes on!
The Book Thief- Nothing I can say about that! Excess feels to the max! However, I am leery of that kind of story and this one blew me away. It is necessary to read!!
The Raven Boys- It isn’t, and it is phenomenal and incredibly unique!
Illuminae- I just finished it and it was…. I have no words. Go ahead, and read it!
These Broken Stars- So not my type of story, but I am so glad that I gave it a chance.

The rest are on my TBR, and I would love to know what you think about them when you finally read them! I am getting ready to read Uprooted, and I am intensely curious. it is well loved, for sure!

    • Oh my goodness, now I want to read ALL of them! This is the problem: too many FABULOUS books, and not even close to enough time. I mean, even if there was never another book released EVER, I probably wouldn’t have time for all the ones I want to read! And telling me that The Raven Boys is unique is HUGE- I have been looking for unique 🙂 Thanks so much for all the info!!

  24. This list is amazing! How do I even vote???
Okay, The Raven Boys is THE BEST THING THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN TO YOU. (But also the worst???) I binged the first three books last year and now I’m dying for The Raven King.
But These Broken Stars… OTP, man, OTP.
I’m so excited for Illuminae and Six of Crows myself, and I should be reading DoSaB in August (I’m terrified)

  25. This was so hard because Daughter of Smoke and Bone, The Book Thief, and The Raven Boys are all great books that I love! However, I went with The Book Thief because it made me ugly cry in a way that very few books make me do.

  26. Ahh you MUST read Six of Crows. It’s so good, I just want to lay down and hug the book for ever and ever. I HATED These Broken Stars. Basically two people go wandering around a deserted island, some weird paranormal/scifi crap happens, and that’s it. I hear Anna is fluffy but really adorable and sweet. Perfect summer read, no? DoSaB is sooo huge, yet it’s fascinating and will hold your attention. I hear mostly good things for Uprooted and Red Rising, so I’d give them a try. Illuminae looks WEIRD. That’s my problem with it xD

  27. I love your reasons for not reading these, they’re perfectly reasonable! =)

Serious though, READ RAVEN BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because: 1. it’s awesome. 2. it’s not about bird people. 3. it’s really really awesome. 4. it has two of my all time favorite ships and you need to meet them! 5. it’s really really really awesome.

I don’t think Daughter Of Smoke and Bone is tooooo confusing, but maybe that’s just me? The books do get longer as they go but also even awesomer! =D

    • I mean, let’s face it, you had me at “Not Bird People”. 😉 OHHH this makes me happy to hear about DoSaB too- I was worried about the sequels, so this is good, very good! I do think TRB is going to win though, so I will be meeting your ships soon 😀

  28. OH. MY. GOD. SHANNON!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone, The Book Thief, The Raven Boys, Uprooted, Six of Crows! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE ME REVOKE YOUR FRIENDSHIP CARD. OMG. READ THESE BOOKS ASAP!

  29. I love the way you organized your TTT. You should definitely read Daughter of Smoke and Bone! I can see why you wouldn’t want to because the story is complex and overwhelming, BUT I PROMISE YOU’LL ENJOY IT 😀 The Book Thief isn’t that bad at all, too! It’s one of the best books I’ve read, and the feels in the end will just make you love it more 😉 Hope you get to read some of them, Shannon, and happy reading!!! <3

    • Aw thanks so much! I definitely WILL read all of them eventually, because they do sound fabulous! I just need motivation and/or time- I figure at least this way, I have some motivation. I am so excited to read them all though- even if the feels scare me 😉

  30. Awww, I was only one of two people who voted for Illuminae! Haha. I know that it’s far from the release date, but goodness gracious, that book was just amazingly done… is it weird for me to have feelings for a fricking artificial intelligence? Because that is what this book did to me in a nutshell… make me feel for a frigging supercomputer O_O among other things of course… surely pew-pews interest you? 😉

    • I was kind of hoping that either Illuminae or Uprooted would win- Illuminae because I have been DYING to read it- it looks fabulous!! ANd Uprooted because seriously, I wanted someone to make me buy it 😉 Either way, I absolutely WILL be reading Illuminae soonish! And I am so excited that you loved it!

  31. Angie

That was a tough choice! I absolutely loved Daughter of Smoke & Bone, but I also really really liked The Raven Boys and Illuminae. I decided to go with my favorite though, because do not be afraid! It’s really not that long or confusing! It’s wonderful! 😀

  32. I voted for These Broken Stars! I absolutely loved that book! The Book Thief is one of my favorite books of all time, but if you are scared of feeling sad…well, you should be. Still, read it when you get a chance, too. 😉
I also really need to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Vicious and The Raven Boys!
I didn’t really like Red Rising or Anna, but maybe you would have better luck!

    • Hhahahah I know, people who NEVER cry cried over The Book Thief and I kind of always cry so… maybe I will literally drown in tears? I don’t know! But I DO need to read These Broken Stars ASAP, because I want to get to the last book when it comes out!! Thanks so much 🙂

  33. Oh noes, you definitely need to read The Book Thief! And you are not the only one who completely misjudges books like you did with The Raven Cycle! I misjudge some books terrible as well, like I did with The Kite Runner and once I even picked up a book because of the author… and realised I had gotten the wrong author. Oops. Anyway, I still need to read all but one of these as well.
