2014 Recap and Countdown Survey

Well, it is that time again! Time to recap the year in books. I had thought that last year I read 114 books, and this year only 113, so I panicked. But then I double checked Goodreads, and I was wrong, it was a tie! I think that is pretty badass, considering this is my first full calendar year of blogging, my first full year having two kids (one of which had three hospital stays)… so yeah. I win.

Shannon (It Starts At Midnight) has
completed her goal of reading 75 books in 2014!

Anyway my goal for next year will be 115. Because I at least want to do more than this year!

Ratings:

Of course, Goodreads only gives full stars, and I always round up on Goodreads because I am nice like that. So it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that my most frequent rating is 4, since it encompasses 3.5 and 4 star books. The breakdown:

  • 33 books rated 4.5 or 5 star (admittedly, a lot of this occurred early in the year, before I got pickier!)
  • 46 books rated 3.5 or 4 star
  • 18 books rated 2.5 or 3 star
  • 5 books rated 1.5 or 2 star
  • 0 books rated .5 or 1 star (wow. I have to start being tougher, no?)
  • 11 books that I haven’t formally rated yet (most are 2015 releases)

Not included are the books I DNFed, of which there are formally two: Melt and Gideon Lee

Blog Stuff:

I published 273 blog posts, which I think is pretty decent, considering the first few months of the year were kind of a mess. I celebrated my first blogoversary, and most importantly, connected with all of you!! Here’s to an equally wonderful, bookish 2015!

Now, for the Countdown Survey, hosted by Novel Ink!

10- 2015 Books You’re Excited About

Only 10!? But but…. I’ll try.  You’re lucky half the books I am dying for don’t have covers. Just saying.

6- Series You Need To Finish

These are literally the only series that all the books are released, I have started, and have yet to finish. I think that is kind of impressive, no?

5- Golden Finds

I did this as some favorites of the year from authors who might not be on everyone’s radar yet (but should be!)

Since I guess we can’t make The Hunger Games again…

2 – Favorite Love Doves

Of all time? Or this year. I am going to go with this year. I guess Sam McKenna and Drill Sgt. Stamm from Rites of Passage and Juliette and Warner from Ignite Me

1 – Book You Wish You Would Have Gotten Around to Reading in 2014

I guess if I can only pick one, this would be it. But really there are a lot of runner ups!

That’s it for me! How was your year in books? Any fun plans for New Year’s Eve?

  1. You sound a little like Dudley Dursley! “112 books?! But last year, last year I read 113!” Anyway, congratulations on sailing through what sounds like an incredibly hectic year! I’ve also read 113 books this year, which is really awesome 😀 Don’t you just love it when you’re ahead of your Goodreads challenge?

May 2015 be an awesome year for you, and I hope you get loads of great books to read!

  2. YAY! Another Juliette and Warner fan! I would love to see Fire & Flood as a movie, that would be awesome! And I’m glad to see that The Secrets We Keep and Denton’s Little Death Date are books you’ll reread, I’m excited to read those!

Thanks for counting down with us 🙂

  3. Ooh yessss Rites was such a brilliant novel! I cannot wait to read more of Joy’s books, because her debut was so promising. I actually heard The Knife of Never Letting Go was getting adapted! I’m not sure if this is still going ahead or not–but it was even on imdb, so I dunno.

    Happy New Year, Shannon! <33

    • I have heard that about The Knife of Never Letting Go too! It was (and as far as I know, still is) in limbo, but I know Lionsgate bought the rights. Hopefully it’ll happen!

And I agree about Joy’s books- talk about a debut! Happy New Year 🙂

  4. Dang it, I forgot to add The Glass Arrow, myself… I’m really looking forward to it in 2015! And looking forward to An Ember in the Ashes and The Sin Eater’s Daughter, too. These books sound fab! I also added Juliette and Warner as favorite loves doves. Warner… *dreamy sigh*

    Happy New Year!

    • I really hope that The Glass Arrow is good (because I already ordered it, along with every other one of the books on my list. Oops?). And YES to Juliette and Warner, my goodness, that last book was something 😉

  5. Shadow and Bone would be a really cool movie if ever :p I have only read Cinder, but I am planning to read the rest this 2015! So exciiiited. So curious about the Unwind Series! Gotta add it in my tbr! Happy New Year <3

    • I agree, I think seeing the world onscreen would be phenomenal! I need to read the rest of the Cinder series too. And YES read Unwind! It is a book I push on pretty much everyone, it is so creepy but amazing! Happy New Year 🙂

  6. Wah, this survey is so much fun! I haven’t read a lot of books your list, but that’s a good thing, because I will read them in 2015! Along with those 2015 debuts…An Ember in the Ashes…The Glass Arrow…give me now! I adored To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. <333 More love for that book! Can't wait for P.S. I still Love You and the comeback of Peter K. Hehe.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

    • I cannot wait for P.S. I Still Love You either! It is pre ordered of course, I am SO excited! I was surprised at the amount of love I had for To All the Boys, but it is among my all time favorites! SO many books to read this year!

      Happy New Year 🙂

  7. I’m SO EXCITED TO READ Challenger Deep and All The Bright Places and also An Ember in the Ashes. I have two of the three, SO I WILL NEED TO ACTUALLY BUY BOOKS this year. All these 2015 releases will be a problem because I spent all night thinking about the lack of bookshelf room on my bookshelf at my house. I wish I had the money to buy another bookshelf but then there’s the problem of matching furniture and BLAH. I’m just going to keep all my books in the living room and hope my roommates don’t get mad at me. WOW I AM SO OFF TOPIC

Is it sad that I have not read any of the books on your 2014 favorites list? AND WHAT YOU HAVE TIME TO REREAD. I’m actually very impressed by your book count this year. IMPRESSED. And my most frequent rating is 4 too. Which I don’t know how I feel about because I feel like my ratings are all relative to each other. I feel like I should’ve rated some books 3 stars but I felt bad. 3 and 4 star reviews are hard to write about though.

OK I’M DONE WITH THIS LONG COMMENT. HAPPY NEW YEAR SHANNON. I hope you have an amazing next year AND YOU WILL BECAUSE YOU WILL SEE ME IN MAY

    • Well, obviously seeing you and Holly is going to be the highlight of 2015. Please. How could it not be?

And I have these SAME bookshelf problems! I have basically two complete sets of furniture in my bedroom, they do NOT match, and then I added another, non-matching bookcase. Like, not matching to either set. I look like some lunatic with tons of books, which is basically the situation.

I am going to confess, when I started reviewing and blogging, I rated up because I felt bad. Now, I don’t do that NOW of course, but like, a year or two ago, I definitely overrated. And I want to go back and change them all (I actually did this with a few)!

  8. Heeeeh he. It’s already 2015 for me. 😉 #livinginthefuture
I was meaning to do this countdown! Aaaand I forgot as is typical for me. *sigh* I really want to read An Ember In the Ashes….and only 78% because of cover love. xD And I’m definitely going to reread The Hunger Games this year. Oh my gawsh….last THG movie this year. NOOOOO. SADNESS. I know there’s more Divergent to look forward to, but I really really hope they pick another awesome YA trilogy to make into a movie. Not the Lunar Chronicles though. I think that’d make a better TV series (so many plot threads!). PARTIALS. That would rock as a movie.

    • I LOVE that you live in the future. I live in your past though, so that is something.

The cover for An Ember pulled me in, but then the synopsis and flailing of others made me pre order it.

Cait. How are we going to make it through Mockingjay Part 2? I mean, I couldn’t even mention it because I am so devastated. Between the feels, and the ending, and… I mean, how will we survive? My fingers are crossed for either Unwind or Chaos Walking to be a movie soon. We need SOMETHING! Help some book nerds out, movie industry!

  9. Ohh this survey looks fun!! MUST DO IT. The Glass Arrow is REALLY good. I can’t wait for Ember and Sin Eater’s Daughter. Ooh you can’t wait to reread The Secrets We Keep? I need to read that soon! RITES OF PASSAGES WAS AMAZING. I feel ya, getting so picky is bothersome xD

    • Ohh yay! I cannot WAIT for The Glass Arrow! I do want to reread The Secrets We Keep! Mainly because I had to pass it along to the next person, and I want to take time to savor it!

  10. Congrats on your reading challenge! It’s cool seeing how you rated things. I mostly rate 3 and 4 too. Wow! Congrats on 273 blog posts! I don’t know how you do it!

Yes to Ember in the Ashes and Sin Eater! I haven’t read any of your top books, I have to change that! I just bought Partials in my Book Outlet order and yay for Cinder! I want a Grisha movie just for Darkling casting is that wrong?

I had a great year in books! Usually we watch movies and eat snacks for New Years, but this year we went to bed. Then I was kept up by stupid fireworks.
