Welcome to October’s Monthly Minutes at Midnight!

Here’s the deal: I’ll share the books I’ve obtained, posts of interest from others, giveaways I have happening, and just general random shenanigans. You know I love a shenanigan.  Also, covers all link to Goodreads and/or reviews, because I am awesome. I link up with the Wrap-Up-Round-Up, because of course I do.

The Books

For Review/From Publishers:

Huge thanks to Entangled for this beauty!! It was really good!

eARCs:

Huge thanks to the publishers, so many most-anticipated books here!  (Also, someone may have gone overboard- you know, again?)

Purchased:

Whoopsie. I bought these as a “crap I have to go back to work” reward because they were all on sale… then I worked for one day before everything shut down/quarantine ?‍♀️

Kindle deals! Space Opera is still on sale for $1.99 too!

Won/Gifted/Traded:

Nothing this month!!

Shenanigans Since Last Time:

I read  12 books this month. I am almost done with two more (including the poll winnerMexican Gothic!) but time got away from me.

Pretty solid bunch here! And I even read a few of my own books again, wheee! I’m enjoying Mexican Gothic so far too, I will let you know next month!

Fancy & New Since Last I Saw You!

I love looking at pretty covers! So here are some new ones that I have fallen in love with since our last update!

Pretty covers are pretty, and this month blessed our eyes!

Things we need to talk about at this juncture:

  • The 100 ended and no of course I am not okay. The finale was actually pretty good, considering. But it is now my life’s goal to “fix” it by editing View Spoiler » into the View Spoiler ». If anyone has any tips for how to make this happen, do share! I am also planning on doing a series of “wrap up” posts, for the whole series, not The Season Which Shall Not Be Named.
  • Shattering Stigmas starts on November 7th!  I still have room (like, tons of room, tbh) for posts if anyone so desires!
  • This month was… a lot.  The pandemic is raging out of control, the election is looming. The 100 is over, Sammy turned 7 and then had surgery, I went to work for exactly one day until all the schools shut down again and then we were all quarantined because someone in Sammy’s class had COVID. Some other random crap happened that I may get to in my Shattering Stigmas post, but my point is, holy crap 2020 is something. We did manage to go to the Pumpkin Patch before we were quarantined, so there’s that!
  • American friends, please make sure you VOTE, if you’ve not already! I have, put my ballot in the mail and it has already been received and counted! But it is too late to mail yours now, so either drop it in a dropbox or vote IN PERSON. Is everyone as terrified as I am? Great. At least we have each other! Also have some strange human children being penguins.

I wish you all a healthy and happy November!!

  1. Wow, that’s a lot of gorgeous covers! I definitely need to check out The Lost Village! I am SO HYPED for A Psalm of Storms and Silence! The first book was so good, I can’t wait to read this one! I hope you like Mexican Gothic!

It has definitely been a month. I’m trying to figure out what I can say for Shattering Stigmas, given my Year of Constant, Massive Change and no actual formal mental health diagnosis, so….dunno. But it’s starting in a week? Meep!

Those are some lovely books, with a lot of sci-fi, so YAY there! I look forward to reading what you think of the ones you read. 🙂

Good on you for voting, and hell, for surviving this month! Your strength is humbling.

    • Well, you can be as personal or as impersonal as you’d like! And there is no requirement of diagnosis either, just being an advocate and supporter is good enough for us! So please don’t feel pressure, and I appreciate you SO, so much. Not just for this either, of course. ♥♥

That’s crazy about your schools, but I’m glad you and the kids are safe/healthy. Keep hanging in there, and reach out if you need anything! Also, your children are super cute penguins. 🙂

  4. Awww, it was exciting to see the kid’s name up there. I trick her into making those posts. When did your kids get so grown!!! They look adorable by the way. I didn’t realize your job shut down so quickly. –sigh– Crazy times.

  5. Ooh the new sara Wolfe! My daughter got that one too. I love the look of The Last Watch. You read all the books I WANT to read lol. This Is How You Lose The Time War looks great too. And oh yeah you mentioned you got The Survivors- how’d you like it?

I’m all for your spoiler. 🙂 And yes 2020 is outstanding, right? What could go wrong next? Wait- forget I said that. Thank goodness it’s almost over. I hope.

    Cute pics. 🙂

    • Oooh does she review herself now too!? That is so cool! Bwhahah well, I feel like I HAVE to read them, because reviews, which is really the only way I get a damn thing done ? I liked The Survivors! But I cannot find the print versions ANYWHERE for under like $20 apiece so idk. I’d do the comic thing on Amazon that you talked about, BUT I only have a black and white Kindle and I worry that wouldn’t translate well? Idkk. I do want to read more though!

And thanks! Luckily you didn’t totally jinx us, at least not yet, I’ll keep my fingers crossed hah.

  6. I love the penguins, I hope you were mama penguin ??

Send Me their Souls has such a striking cover. Much different from the first book imo. Also I don’t recognize any of the arcs you got from pubs. Am I no longer hip?

    • Aw thank you! I considered it but the costume was so expensive! And right, the cover change was a BIG difference! A few of the eARCs are adult sci-fi, so I definitely wouldn’t expect that you’d know those! But there are a few upcoming YA in there! I feel like perhaps The Prison Healer and Some Other Now will be relatively well-known!

  7. I have an eARC of The Apocalypse 7, but I also have 3 more I need to go through before I read it LOL. I also have my sight set on House of Hollows (though for me the cover is a little disturbing in its beauty), but of course I was rejected for it because oops, INT blogger. What’s new. I mean to buy it later though, because I don’t know how to hold a grudge (to publishers, that is ?).

I hope your election goes where everyone who isn’t a privileged stinky a-hole needs it to go…
I also hope Sam is OK!
    Good luck with Shattering Stigmas!

  8. Aaaah! J’adored Enchantée and can’t wait for Everything that Burns!

I put my family’s ballots in the drop box at the library today (it was my daughter’s first time voting). I don’t want either of the two major candidates to win, and I won’t like the results either way, but I hope it goes the way of whatever’s least bad for the country. I’ll probably like the winners of some of the local contests and ballot measures though.

    Have a great November!

  9. Ah I am so intrigued about Some Other Now, I hope you’ll enjoy it 🙂 and yay for reading Chasing Lucky, I love Jenn Bennett’s stories so, so much, they always make me happy <3
I hope that November will be kind to you Shannon, take care of yourself <3 <3

  10. Thanks for sharing my post! I had a fairly good reading month, though I didn’t read as much as I’d wanted. However, I re-read Bring Me Their Hearts and hope to start the second one ASAP since the final book is coming out. Glad to hear you loved it.

Sorry about Sammy’s surgery – I hope all is well. This year has just been insane, and my anxiety is going up and up and up. Sigh. I need good news. Stat.

  11. Oh wow! That looks like such a nice haul with books that have such pretty covers! Also, I am the queen of buying myself items to make something stressful have an upside (books, cupcakes, leggings, you name it!) so I fully understand the necessity of buying a stack of books before going back to work!

I hope quarantine went okay, and that everything is back to “normal” now. I’m glad you managed to have a fun family outing before you had to quarantine!

As for the favorite cover section, House of Hollow has to be my favorite. I absolutely love anatomy and flowers mixed together! I guess I find both things cool/pretty on their own, so the mix of the 2 is even better? Who really knows! My mind is a mystery! Moth also has a super freaking cool cover! I think my weirdest opinion of all though, is my take on Forestborn. I’ve been obsessed with flags recently (as in I memorized the flags of almost every country and territory over a few days lays week) and to me, Forestborn looks like a mashup of the flags for the Christmas Islands and Tokelau (possibly with the Cocos Island flag through into the mix as well)!

Anyways, moving on from my flag fascination, thank you so much for mentioning both my post and Chana’s! I feel kind of guilty looking at the rest of the posts on your list, since I haven’t read ANY of them yet because of school! Hopefully I’ll get a chance to check some of them out soon!

    I hope you’re having a wonderful November!
