Olympics

So, it’s that time again- time for an Olympic Games! Friday (August 5th!) marks the Opening Ceremonies in Rio. I confess, I used to get giddy excited about them, mostly for the swimming. Fine, exclusively for the swimming, but I’d totally watch some gymnastics, and even a track race or two. I doubt I’ll watch a ton of events this year, just because of time, but I figured I might as well do something bookish to celebrate, no?

Feel free to do this yourselves- all of you! Use my graphics, whatever- and a shout out to Smashing Magazine for the freebie sports icons!

Bwhahah who is surprised? Anyone? No? Didn’t think so. From the first page I was hooked.

Fine, it is technically a wagon trip, but let’s not be too picky. I am fairly sure that in a former life, I traveled the Oregon Trail. There’s really no other explanation for my obsession. obt12

Oh crap, can’t use The Hunger Games again, can I? Painted myself into a corner, I suppose. Just kidding, I love this one!

This one is one of the most satisfying triangles ever- I guess if you ship the ship that I ship, anyway 😉

Sorry, all Handball aficionados, I do not understand this game. Even after reading about it on Wikipedia. So yeah. Anyway, here’s a book that frankly, I still don’t understand.

If you do, feel free to chime in!

This isn’t a beach book, but it has got to be my favorite “summery” book! Plus, who wouldn’t want to spend their summers in Europe? Pshh.

This was like one giant, witchy battle. Some people (Cait) loved it. Some people (Shannon) get mad every time they think about it.

I am wary of thrillers because I usually guess the twists- but I did not guess these twists- and when I thought I might be guessing, new twists appeared! Well done, Liars, Inc.

Look, tears = water, so it works. Plus, if any of you have swam, I all but guarantee that you’ve sobbed over it. So yeah.

Not only is this one a favorite (much like swimming), but I cried so hard I wanted to vomit. In the best way, of course. Again, just like swimming 😉

I didn’t dislike this book… it just took me weeks upon weeks to finish. Much longer than usual. It could have moved along a bit, if I do say so. It’s also why I am hesitant to start Queen of Shadows– that, and the spoilers that I read all over the place no matter how hard I tried to avoid them.

This is the first Baby-Sitters Club book I ever read, and it made me fall in love. With the BSC, with books in general. ♥

FIXED! Thanks again to Jess @ Princessica of Books!! 😀

Because MANCHEE, okay?

“Don’t read it anymore”, said Val. “It doesn’t get better, honest!” she implored. And yet, the Shannon kept on struggling through. For reasons. As she’d soon discover, Valerie was correct. Valerie is usually correct.

Because these friends are actual #SquadGoals, mmmkay?

Do you guys watch the Olympics? What’s your favorite? I am totally biased in my love for swimming, of course!

And stay tuned, I have an Olympic themed book review coming up too (hint: It is one of the books above!)!

P.S.- I tag literally everyone. Don’t make me start to call out names. I’ll do it!

  1. What a great tag, Shannon! I’m soooo excited for the Olympics! The only thing left to do now is to figure out when the Opening Ceremony will be in my timezone. I’m pretty sure it’s at 6am or some ridiculous hour. Swimming and artistic gymnastics are also the two sports that I’m super excited for. Being an Aussie, obviously swimming will be THE event for me. But I also love watching gymnastics and I’ve been watching the Olympic gymnastics trials for other countries (the ones I can access anyway).

  2. I am so doing this!! This tag is awesome!!
When I was a kid I was all about the water sports in the Olympic games. Synchronized jumps being my absolute favorite, because nothing beats a perfect jump with 0 amount of water dislodged and when two people land at the exact same time in the water. Okay, so I was obsessed with it. Next came gymnastics, because it’s super cool.

  3. Some people (spoiler: Cait) really really like masochistic books and have no respect for their feels apparently. This is how it is. THERE IS NO DENYING IT. *goes away to sob and love and pet Half Lost* :’)
Also I LOVE THIS TAG!! So creative! Although are you trying to tell me that handball is an Olympic sport????. Because what and how.
Also I don’t really watch much of the Olympics?? But I DO like to see the Aussies slaying it in the water! Although last time I believe we got absolutely flogged and it was embarrassing. >_> The Australians are supposed to lead in the pool? Sheesh. Here’s to hoping we do sort of better. AND YAY RIO!! I know tons about Rio because I watched that movie about the bird called Rio? #winning

  4. I LOVE THIS TAG. Seriously though. I love the Olympics – gymnastics, swimming, all the track and field events. So excited for them and am so doing this tag. I just won the Serpent King so I guess I should read it?? I need to continue with the Half Bad series. I liked it but then just never reached for the next one. Emmy & Oliver is #SquadGoals for sure.

  5. This is such a fun way to participate in the olympic buzz! I personally don’t watch it, I just don’t really like sports in general. But I also like swimming! 😀 MANCHEE OMG. Manchee is the best part of that book in my opinion <3

  6. This tag is awesome. I usually don’t watch the summer Olympics because I’m not a big sports person. I do watch hockey, but that’s a winter thing. I’ll see if I can come up with some books for this tag. Some of those categories are tough. 🙂

  7. This is so cute! I love it. I might do it. Maybe not. Because I’m BAD at remembering book tags I should do. But this is SOO cute. And an awesome way to celebrate the Olympics

  8. I totally ship that ship that you’re shipping Shannon. Actually, I’m surprised you didn’t use the entire Hunger Games series in there. I don’t mind the Olympics,.only because I like to see Aussies flogging other countries which isn’t often these days. Handballing and trampoling though, if they combine the two they might really have something then.

  9. Brazil is a nightmare because of the olympic games. Everything is either falling apart or wasn’t finished on time. That’s not even counting the corruption scandal that’s still being uncovered.

BUT I did enjoy this tag though! It’s really fun and gives everyone a chance to highlight their favorite books!

  10. I can’t tell you how excited I am for the Olympics. It’s the one sporting event that I LOVE watching!
Also omg how creative are you!!
Walk on Earth is definitely one of my favorite wagon-trip book. I can’t wait to read more of this series. Have you read Rae Carson’s The Girl of Fire & Thorns? It’s amazeballs!
I feel you about HoF. I DNFed it because I just couldn’t handle how slow and boring it was. I don’t think I’ll be reading the rest of the series.
Emmy & Oliver is always the first book that comes to mind when I think of best friendships. I think it’s time for me to re-read that book.
    Fun tag, Shannon! 🙂

  11. I love this tag! Thank you for nominating everyone because I’m definitely going to do this in time for the olympics. Swimming and gymnastics are my favourite events too. I find it amazing how good the gymnasts are – I can barely even do a forward roll! Half Lost was so violent, but I loved it! I found Heir of Fire super slow too, but once it picked up I enjoyed it so much 🙂

  12. I love the Olympics! Even though Brazil seems to be having all kinds of problems this year, I confess I’m still pretty pumped for the Games. What a fun tag! And swimming is one of my favorite events- that and diving (and rowing)… well you get the idea. lol

I’ve been curious about several of these books. Liars Inc in particular and hearing that it has great plot twists makes me want to read it even more. Several of her books have appealed to me but I was going to read Vicarious first when it comes out- but I think I’m going to add Liars to my TBR also.

I’ll have to do this one, this should be fun to put together. 🙂

  13. I know you already know but THIS IS SUCH A GREAT TAG. I love the olympics, but I don’t know if I will be able to watch it this year. I mean, maybe if I find it online? ALSO LOOK I AM FEATURED YEAH. I am usually always right about books 🙂

  14. Love this tag. I am totally going to do it!! I love the Olympics. My favorites are swimming and gymnastics. I read The Serpent King a few months ago and I cried so hard. I was not expecting that one tragedy, but maybe I should have, right? I also just read The Knife of Never Letting Go. Damn, that was a good book. Manchee is awesome!

  15. Is it bad that I actually forgot all about the Olympics this year. I usually get so excited for them. Like you, I loooooove the swimming, actually I love most of the water based sports but swimming is definitely number 1 in my book. 😉
I absolutely love this tag and I will definitely be tagging myself to do this haha. I think I’d struggle with the good love triangle question because of my intolerance of them but I’m sure I can think of something.
I read Play On a few weeks ago and it’s basically got me hooked on these contemporary sport romances. I have no knowledge of baseball but I’m definitely a lot more appreciative of the sport after reading that book haha.
I suppose I should figure out what time the opening ceremony is in my zone. 😛

  16. Lauren @ My Expanding Bookshelf

This is such a great idea for a tag! I think I’m definitely going to give it a go in the next few week1

  17. YES YES YES….ALL THE YES!!!!! I cannot wait to take part in this tag, damn it gets me so excited for the actual Olympics. I didn’t even think I could be more excited, but look at me go. Shannon, you created a brilliant tag and I’m quite jealous I didn’t think of it first 😛

  18. Ok, I will definitely be doing this tag! I don’t watch much of the Olympics, but I’ve always had a soft spot for gymnastics. Also a friend of mine, Dee Salukombo is running in the games this year – so excited for him!

  19. I, um, never watch the Olypmic games (hiding monkey face emoji). I probably should after actually semi-enjoying the soccer games I’ve watched, but I feel like I’d need some friends who care for it and MORE TIME OMG. Also, I always feel kind of overwhelmed by it? Like, I never know when anything is on and there’s just so much of it and 90% I don’t care about? I never really turn on my TV randomly, so I don’t catch glimpses of it either. Walk on Earth a Stranger and Wanderlost are totally on my TBR because I keep hearing about them!

  20. I watch the Olympics for the swimming! I usually never watch the gymnastics, but then there was that video of a guy who twisted his leg in a really weird way atthe Olympics :/
But I totally agree with Heir of Fire as slow-paced – I actually DNF’ed it with how slow paced it was :/

  21. Ali

Swimming and gymnastics are my favorite to watch, but most of sports are usually fun (: This was a great tag! Poor Manchee 🙁

  22. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! I love this tag!! You’re a freakin’ genius 🙂 I’m sorry you don’t have a lot of time to watch the games this year b/c they are so fun. I’m just sitting on the couch and watching and “blogging”. I’m such a slouch about it 🙂

I love your picks!! I might try this if I can think of some books. Nothing is coming to mind, though!!

And I personally love swimming, too, because I used to do swim team myself. I can’t believe you tagged everyone, too funny!!

  23. I love this tag! And ALSO: Liars Inc! I really like the sound of that! I did And your one line review of The Serpent King is a thing of beauty lol!

  24. This is one of the best book-tags I’ve seen this summer, Shannon, thanks so much for sharing! Ima gonna try to set up a post like this for next week 😀 So much fun to read the different categories, and why you chose the books you did for each of them 🙂
    I hope you’re having a fabulous week 🙂

  25. OOH I’M TOTALLY DOING THIS TAG. I haven’t watched any of the Olympics, WHAT IS THIS SACRILEGE?!

Ah, Half Lost, the book in which I sobbed and nearly had a panic attack. Fun times. I loved the book but I’m still traumatized over it. And OHMYGOSH MANCHEE *Cries 5ever*. And YES I LOVE THE BABYSITTERS CLUB SO MUCH!!! I still have most of the books and I want to reread them soon! *_*

  26. I absolutely love this idea (and the graphics)! I’m stealing/borrowing this idea for a future post next week. (And crediting you, of course!) Better late than never. 🙂

  27. this is seriously such a fun tag and i am totally going to do it 🙂
i haven’t read emmy & oliver yet but it is on my shelf at home. i really struggled with heir of fire as well (it was just so slow and so MUCH) but i loved queen of shadows.

  28. I love this so, so much! Thanks for sharing all the graphics. I am quite obviously going to do this (I knew immediately that my story I didn’t get was “The Little Prince” which was all kinds of fantastical, but I’m pretty sure is supposed to contain satire and meaningful metaphors, while I was skimming the surface reading about a boy from space). I read Throne of Glass but have been heavily debating whether I want to continue on. And the cover of Walk on Earth a Stranger is gorgeous! Is that a fantasy story or is it more historical (I’m thrown by the cover vs your description of a wagon trip).
