This Week At Midnight (82)

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews. It gives us a chance to share with readers what we bought, borrowed, swapped, won or got for review each week. I also decided that since I do a weekly recap, it really is just good sense to link up with The Sunday Post, hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewerbecause that is such a fun link up as well!

Huge thanks to Disney-Hyperion and Big Honcho Media for this amazing box of loveliness. Passenger and swag? I think I have gone to bookish heaven!

And I won The Dead House only moments after trading for a copy haha. So huge thanks to This Is Teen for this gorgeous hardcover (I will show you under the jacket someday, it is amazing!)

Weekly Shenanigans

Three books, yes. Still, somehow more than I obtained. Impressive, right? (No, not really, I agree.)

1st-place This is hard, and not because I loved them all. So, Placebo Junkies is probably the best book, but I think I was more connected to/enjoyed The Yearbook more. So take that for what it’s worth.

Posts this Week:

(Yeah, I brought it back. I felt bad for not considering my mobile-using friends.)

Blogosphere Bulletin:

Random Musings:

Welp, still at a standstill. Here’s the situation: My children don’t want me to ever sleep again, so I have had significantly less blogging time. But I will get back to normal. I will. And if I owe you some blog visiting love, I promise it is on its way 😀  You guys are the best! Thanks for helping me celebrate my second blogoversary, and just generally being fabulous!

Things we need to talk about this week:

    • I am trying to decide if it is worth it to go to the double-Mockingjay feature with my mom. It’s $25/ticket, which is kind of ridiculous, but… it only happens once. So you guys, help me decide!
    • The final Mockingjay 2 trailer is here. Don’t mind me, sobbing in the corner again, for all kinds of reasons.
    • I need bookstagram inspiration. Where do you all take your bookish pictures? I can’t find a good spot!

Have a fabulous week, loves!

  1. I take my bookstagram pictures in front of my bookshelf. xD Books make a ridiculous awesome backdrop, tbh. OR!! Outside! OUTSIDE IS GREAT!! Because flowers and dirt and things. *nods* Although my parents cleaned up the yard and a) threw out wood I was using as a backdrop, and b) ripped up “weeds” that were super pretty. MY LIFE IS SO HARD, OMG.
    eham. XDXD
I hope your kids let you sleep soon. These little humans with their opposition to sleep, omg.

    • I was thinking of the bookshelf, but I am going to need a table of some sort. Outside is hard because I live in a not-so-pretty area. I did take some at my parents’ house that were cute. Maybe I will bring a few books there every week or something. I don’t know, Bookstagram is HARD.

Little humans hate sleep. They are sleep terrorists.

  2. What is with those little humans and not letting us sleep??? My youngest likes to wake up at 3:30 or 4am lately. It’s been a blast. I take my book pictures at my kitchen table with different place mats mostly. Or on the floor in my office or the book case. Hope you enjoy your new books! Thanks for the link back 🙂 – Have a great week!

    • WHAAAT?! Your child hates sleep a LOT. How do you function!? My goodness. Tell him or her that we don’t approve. Like, the entire blogosphere is putting the kibosh on that!

OHH placemats are a good call! I have a hard time, I think it is the lighting in my room that makes it always turn out so weird- almost yellowish? One of these days, I will have time to experiment 😉

  3. I ALSO REQUIRE BOOK PHOTOGRAPHY ADVICE. If you figure it out, I’d love a post on that sometime. And I’m basically relying on you to be my source on all HG news, haha. That trailer is really chilling, and I can’t wait to see it in theaters! Is your double feature basically Part 1 + Part 2? If it’s within your financial abilities, I’d say do it! Part 1 was nice, but wasn’t fantastic because it needed Part 2 a bit too much — together, they should be fab.

Thanks for the shout out! Absolutely delighted you’re loving my Chinese culture posts as well as the bookish/writerly ones.

    • While I don’t actively take pictures of books, my favorite places, in my home to take pictures of individual or small groups of things, include the following places…

      1) My bookshelves
      2) The longest counter in my kitchen–the walls are white and the counter is white/gray and I have under the cupboard lighting.
      4) This stupid awkward nook right outside our bedroom.
      3) My newest spot…in front of the brown curtains on a small rug in front of our patio door.

    • I will absolutely make a post if I figure out ANY ways to make book photography less of a hassle! ANd I am so glad that my Hunger Games posting helps someone! It’s better than admitting that I have a legit obsession 😀

I think they will be AMAZING together. I think I am going to do it. I mean, yeah, it’s a lot of money, but hey, it’s only going to happen once. Plus, my mom will probably end up giving me the money back at some point anyway 😉

    • I will DEFINITELY do a post if I ever figure it out. Which I doubt I will. But we can hold out SOME hope 😉 And YAY I am happy to be a THG source! Not much new info this week, sadly.

I am totally buying the tickets too! Actually, I should do it right now while I remember. Also, I responded to this comment, I KNOW I did, but then WordPress ate it. So for that, I am sorry.

And I LOOOVE your Chinese culture posts! Aw hell, I love ALL your posts 😀

  4. First, good job not getting more than you can read in one week. I’m proud of you! Mockingjay with Mom…is she as into the books as you? Anything special you can do with Mom has no price, so don’t worry about that, but is it something she will love, too?

    • Thank yoU! This is two weeks in a row, so I am a good little student 😉 Don’t worry, this week I shall be back to my old tricks 😀

My mom actually did really like the books! See, I have gone to all the premieres with her, but Val is coming in for the weekend and we are going to see Mockingjay, so I think it would be nice to go with my mom to the double feature. Plus, when will this ever happen again, you know? I think I have decided to go for it!

  5. I fail at the Instagram life. I see people posting all these beautiful photos, and I tell myself “it’s because they have a really fancy camera”. Then I discover that they just use their iPhone. Ok, so maybe I just suck lol.

    • YES! I HAVE a fancy camera and I still suck. I mean, there is seriously nothing more that I can do, except give up 😉 Actually, I blame my house a lot because the lighting is absolute crap. I took a few decent pictures at my parents’ house, so I think I should just start bringing my books there!

  6. Totally feel you on not sleeping kids means no will to blog. I like to take pics in front of pretty bookshelves full of other awesome books, not that I take many bookish photos.

  7. DDDOOOO IIITTT!! I would go with you if I could! I cry ever times I see the trailers (to the point my hubs asked me last night if I was having a breakdown.in his defense he rarely sees me cry but he doesnt understand!!!! Ughh my heart) LOVE hte Passenger package!! It’s so cute! Thank you so much for featuring my lil ol’ post in your run down. It’s the smallest gesture but it warms my heart so much and the fact that you do it all the time is awesome. We get so wrapped up in our own blogs that i love seeing us go to bat for our fellow bookworms.

    • I feel you, the trailers are HARD to watch. I need to reread the books but I am running out of time! I am definitely going to go, I just need to buy the tickets (and do it soon!)

Awww thank you!! That made my day!! I am so happy that you guys love it as much as I love collecting my favorite posts of the week 😀

  8. I’m sorry to hear your kids aren’t letting you sleep. I hope that stops soon. I’d say go for it! You love the Hunger Games and like you said, it’s only once. I understand your struggle with the price. I think it’s probably worth it though. I’ve noticed lots of nice booky photos outside.

    • Aw thanks! These children… AGH. They are insane 😉 And I agree with you, I think it IS worth it, and I am going to do it 😀

See, I think the best bookish photos ARE outside, but my yard is pretty jacked up. My parents have a gorgeous yard, and some nice woods and such, but dragging the books all the way to their house feels like SUCH a pain. The struggle!

  9. The Passenger swag is gorgeous! And congrats on turning two! That’s so exciting! And you should totally go to the Mocking Jay double feature. I love the Blogosphere Bulletin feature by the way!

  10. The Passenger book swag is absolutely drool-worthy and the book is one my most anticipated releases.
I say go for it with the Mockingjay feature. I went to one showcasing all three Hobbit films and it was honestly worth every penny. I think it just makes the experience that more intense and emotional. I’d take tissues with you haha.

  11. I hope you enjoy The Passenger, and all that swag. (also, i am seething with jealousy)
You mine as well buy the tickets for that double feature. You are probably a bigger fan than me and I would buy them. I feel you on the loss of sleep. Ugh. I have been the last person to bed and the first one up all week. I needs a nap.

  12. The cover for Passneger is so stunning! I kinda want to read it and maybe not at the same time, as I usually don’t like time travel books ,but it does sound like a great book. I am looking forward to hear what you think of it! And yay for a week with books you all enjoyed! I hope you have a great week!

  13. Shannon, you always get the best books! AHHH! I hope you end up enjoying them all. I absolutely loved The Dead House (so spooky and well-written), so I hope you do too. And I absolutely love Alexandra Bracken so I’m crossing my fingers that you find Passenger to be as good as her Darkest Minds trilogy. Also…that Mockingjay trailer though. ? Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous recap! ♥

  14. Mockingjay, Mockingjay, Mockingjay… yeah do the double featur sound like fun! I’m looking forward to it a lot even though I haven’t read the books, but I am enjoying the movies. And happy blogoversary!! Here’s to many more.

  15. I bought The Dead House recently and I REALLY hope to find time to read it soon. Perfect for the month after all. I say go to the Mockingjay Double Feature. It only happens once, as you said, and I love doing those type of things when I can. 🙂

  16. HUHUHU THAT BOOK OF PASSENGER AND THAT SWAG LOOKS SO AMAZING!!! I’m maybe just a weeee bit jealous 😉 But hey! I have Dead House so that’s a win for me as well!

And $25?!?!! HOLY SHIT THAT IS EXPENSIVE, BATMAN! O.O But by double feature do you mean they show it twice? or do they show the first Mockingjay and then the second one right after? If that’s the case, it might be something to reconsider… I’d want to watch the first one too to have the whole MOCKINGJAY experience!

  17. WHOA. THAT PASSENGER SWAG PACK IS COOL.

Ooh. I can’t wait to see your review of Placebo Junkies! Also, you should totally get the Mockingjay double-feature tickets! I still haven’t seen Part 1 yet but that trailer is spectacular!

  18. The Mockingjay thing is up to you! How much of a price difference is it? Also, can you handle all those feels in one go?? But really, if it’s something you want to do and you can afford it, then there’s no reason not to! It’s your thing, anyway 😉 That would be like telling me I didn’t need to get the new hardcover for the first Throne of Glass book. You don’t technically HAVE to do it, but if it’s YOUR PRECIOUS then it’s worth it!

  19. I am such at fail at Bookstagram pics. Even when I take the time to stage something it’s semi-lame. LOL I think one of my main issues is lighting. I’m at the office all day so I can’t take advantage of all the wonderful natural lighting. Woe is me. 🙂 I vote yes on the Mockingjay double feature! It’ll be a fun experience and something special with Mom.

  20. The Dead House looks so creepy and yet at the same time perfect for this time of year. Oh ugh I cannot wait for the next movie <3 the first part left me wanting more.

  21. Can’t wait for that Mockingjay movie to come out! It is gonna be so epic! Also, Passenger seems like it is gonna be such a good book and it came with some cool looking swag as well. Enjoy!
