sdTop Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is: Ten Books To Read If You Like This Super Popular Book/Author

Well, we all know by now how well I follow the rules. So these, my dear friends, are dubbed:

Books for People Who Don’t Want to Live on This Planet Anymore.

live_on_this_planet_futurama

So, some of these take place off-Earth, and some just contain characters from other planets and such. I have read these (with the exception of two. And a half).

These Broken Stars (Starbound) by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

(No, I haven’t read this one, but I know I’ll be bombarded with tomatoes if I don’t put it on here. And I will read it, okay?)

The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave) by Rick Yancey

The 100 (The Hundred) by Kass Morgan

(Look, I haven’t read this, but I fangirl like mad over the show, and that has to count for something, right?)

So, do you like spacey books? Any recommendations? Any of these you’ve read and liked/disliked? Plan on seeing The 5th Wave movie? And most importantly, how excited are you for The 100 to come back!?

  1. Super cool graphics. Very impressed.
I love both the Lunar Chronicles series and the Chaos Walking series. Also love me some Ursula Le Guin. I don’t think off-planet is an automatic win for me, but some authors use the genre to explore super interesting ideas.

  2. Eve

I do love a good space story now and then! I liked These Broken Stars, Cinder, and The Host. I have a few others on my list to get to and a few more to look up! Good list

  3. I’ve never read a space-y story, but I want to! I like to give all types of books a try at least once because how will I know what kind of books I like if I don’t? And ohmygoodness The Cage sounds so fascinating! I have to add it to my TBR. And I totally liked The Maze Runner, which is what the description compared it to. I also totally have way too many books on my TBR and am getting anxiety about deciding what to read next because I’m finding so many interesting books lately lol.

    • I used to be SO anti-space story, but now I kind of like them, as long as they’re done well. The Cage was SO weird but SO fabulous! One of my favorites! I feel your pain, there are SO many amazing sounding books but not nearly enough time!

  4. THIS BLOG IS SO BEAUTIFUL WHOA.

Sorry I just had to say that :p

Great post. I’ve read some of the books you listed and I even like some of them. The Lunar Chronicles is my favourite! Red rising is brutaaal. As you go further, be prepared!

  5. Sam

I loved These Broken Stars, so, I am glad it made your list. I really liked the first Alienated book, too. I heard good things about the Zodiac books, and plan on reading them, as well.

  6. Ooh, good list. The 100… yeah we’ve talked about that- awesome! 🙂 Illuminae has caught my interest and I think I’m going to read that for SciFi Month- and Return Once More (formerly the Historians) is finally coming out! Been waiting for that one…

    Have a great week!

    • Thanks! Yes, The 100 is so amazing! I want to read the book to compare, and I will, but… time 😉 And you MUST read Illuminae- it is perfect for SciFi month AND just perfect in general. It’s so, so unique and fabulously done. And Return Once More was FABULOUS. When I wrote this post, I thought it was coming out on the 29th, but then when I went to leave my review on Amazon (5 stars, because it was THAT good), it said October 20! So I have no idea. But I hope you love it when you get the chance to read it!

  7. Ha I totally didn’t follow the rules this week either!!! I don’t think I would want to live on space but I apparently do enjoy books taking place there. The Lunar Chronicles were awesome and I really enjoyed These Broken Stars. A couple more of these are on myTBR. Great picks and love the graphic!

  8. I love your title of this post, because it could be interpreted as (a) SO MANY FEELS KILL ME NOW or (b) SO MANY FEELS TAKE ME INTO THE FICTIONAL WORLD NOW. I also love your gorgeous graphic! I’ve heard so much about Red Rising I’m definitely going to nab it next book haul. And ooh, I see you slipped in a TV show there — if I had more time I would totally watch it, but Game of Thrones is a bad enough abyss for my time *sobs*

  9. YES I LOVE SPACE-Y BOOKS!!! And even if I DNFed the book, I’m definitely going to go see The 5th Wave. 😉 Amongst the books you listed, I’ve only read These Broken Stars (LOVED), Cinder (also loved!) and half of The 5th Wave (ick). And I watched The Host and season 1 of The 100. ;P I’m going to read Illuminae SOON. Red Rising’s definitely on my TBR as well!

    • Hahaha I didn’t LOVE The 5th Wave either, but I think it could actually be better as a movie. So I will too. And maybe I will even read the sequel one day? We’ll see 😉 Ohh I saw The Host too- it was good, but the book is MUCH better (of course haha). And watch Season 2 of The 100 because oh my goodness, it is INCREDIBLE. And ILLUMINAE. HOLY CRAP, do it!!!

  10. Ooooo I love the graphic, Shannon! We’ve talked about this before a while ago, but I love The Cage and all it’s weirdness. Although everyone says the TV show is better, I still need to read The 100, as well. I think I am in the small minority of people who didn’t like These Broken Stars. It was just too weird for me, I guess. Hopefully it will go better for you.

    • Thanks so much!! And I definitely want to read the book, even if it may suck. I would at least be amused, I hope? I do hope These Broken Stars works for me, mostly because the cover is pretty 😉 That’s a ridiculous reason, yes, but it’s true!

  11. I LOVE SCI-FI BOOKS. I want to study astrophysics so basically anything that involves space I’ll get my hands on haha! I read The 5th Wave , The Knife of Never Letting Go and Cinder and LOVED them, so I’m really eager to try out the rest of these!

  12. Great list, Shannon! Your list looks so cute this week. 😀 If it makes you feel any better, Cinder is the only book on your list I’ve read – The Host, The Knife of Never Letting Go, The 5th Wave and These Broken Stars are all on my TBR, though. 🙂

  13. I absolutely adore the presentation of your posts. Sci-fi is one of my go to genres so this list is perfect for me. The Starbound trilogy is one of my go-to sci-fi reads, as well as Red Rising and the Lunar Chronicles. The anticipation for Illuminae is slowly killing me. I’m not sure I’ll last the wait for the release of the book haha. I’ve heard a lot of great things about The 100 as well so I’ll add it to my list of things to check out.

    • Aww thank you SO much!! I think you will LOVE Illuminae- and less than 3 weeks to go 😀 Seriously, it was phenomenal, and I don’t think I have heard of anyone who hasn’t liked it so far! I hope you love it!

As for The 100- I am OBSESSED with the show. So obsessed, it is AMAZING. You should definitely check it out! The book I have heard is not nearly as good, BUT I do plan to read it someday 😉

  14. Now I want to watch Space Jam!! I love the graphic you made! I loved The Cage and Cinder, and I’m so excited for Illuminae! I’ll have to check out some of these books!

    • Hahhaha YAY I am glad you understood the reference. I fear that it is WAY too old for a lot of people 😉 I haven’t even seen the movie, but the song was on the radio every 5 minutes so…. 😉 And definitely get Illuminae ASAP! It is soooo good! I hope you love it!

  15. *says nothing about These Broken Stars*

I can’t wait to read Illuminae later this month! It’s going to be a beast in size, but I think it’ll be worth it from what I’ve heard.

I really enjoyed Cinder, and I kind of have a love/hate thing with The 5th Wave and I’m still debating on whether or not I want to read the final book.

    • Illuminae is absolutely worth it! The size isn’t as bad as it seems either, because of the way it’s formatted. Some pages are more text-heavy than others, but for the most part it’s broken up very nicely!

I feel you with The 5th Wave- I am on the fence about the second book actually!

  16. The only book on your list that I have read is Cinder though I do have These Broken Stars from the library right now.
Thanks so much for sharing your list!
    Amanda

  17. Ooh! I love this, Shannon. Have you seen my blog design? I love space if you can’t tell. 😛
Anyways, I’ve read a few on your list. But I can’t believe you haven’t read These Broken Stars! The ship, Shannon, the ship!
I’m hoping to read Illuminae soon maybe sometimes this week and I hope it lives up to the hype for me. 🙂

    • Yes! I love your design because of the space stuff- I am a sucker for space pictures, and covers, and all of it! I know, I really, really need to read These Broken Stars! And I WILL, I promise 😉

Illuminae is amazing- I really hope you love it, it is SO unique!

  18. I’ve owned The 5th Wave for a long time now – I really need to get on it so I can see the movie. I’m pretty freaked out by outer space, so I tend to avoid most films/books that actually take place IN space, but it all depends too. haha

    • Hahah it IS a freaky concept, really. I mean, thinking about being alone in a vast expanse of nothingness… yeah, I am probably adding to the freakout, sorry!

The 5th Wave wasn’t bad, wasn’t great, but I think the movie could actually end up being better than the book in this case, if it is done well. Kind of like The Maze Runner, it’s kind of “made” for a screen!

  19. Great list here! I would put the Ender Series on this list, since there are like 3 scenes on earth in them. Also, you forgot to Star Wars books. (what no one else loves the Star Wars Universe, just me?)
Oh and I love that graphic. Can I ask what software you used to make it? I can picture what I would need to accomplish that Gimp, but that is a lot of steps on Gimp. It is really genius.

    • The Ender series and I do not get along. For reasons that have nothing to do with the books 😉 Also, I have seen like, maybe 5 minutes of Star Wars once and I won’t lie to you, I didn’t even know they were books! 😀

AWW thank you so much! This one I made in Picmonkey! I usually use either Picmonkey or Canva, depending on the task at hand. It was a lot of steps though- I had to cut out all the covers, and then shove them all into the big graphic.

  20. I LOVE SPACE BOOKS. SO MUCH. JUST SO MUCH.

There seriously need to be more. And I’m trying to think of the ones I’ve read that AREN’T on your list, but it’s not coming to me. I can only think of The Martian which I haven’t picked up yet (though I really, really want to watch the movie).

omg Illuminae is about space. AND WHAT THE HECK please finish reading Red Rising, and also start reading These Broken Stars. I see you put the 100 there. Ha. Ha.

OH JUST THOUGHT OF ONE. Ender’s Game. Bam.

    • The Martian is one I NEED to read so I can see the movie. But I want to read the book first, of course. I have had it for ages too. And Illuminae is just amazing. AMAZING. Have you not read it yet!? I had to put The 100, mostly because I was running out of ideas 😉 And I PROMISE I will read them soon.

NO to Ender’s Game. You know how I feel about that jerk. (Not Ender, his creator.)

  21. I had to read this because of the title! I’m not the biggest fan of space-y books… I like them, but they aren’t my favorite. I will probably see 5th Wave (not super excited though) and ohmygosh! I finally watch The 100 early this year and I am SOOOO excited for it to come back, can it come back already????

    • Bwhahah glad you got the reference 😀 They aren’t generally my favorite either, I am VERY hit or miss with them, BUT I liked these. SOme of them ARE favorites. And the covers are always wins 😉

And YAYYYY The 100! I NEED it to be back. Only like, 4 months to go? ::SOBS::

  22. We are definitely going to read The 100 series someday. Definitely. And then snark about it. *nods* Also WHY HAVEN’T YOU READ THESE BROKEN STARS YET, SHANNON? OMG DO IT.

  23. Good spacey books (I love spacey btw!) I have read recently include The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers and Tracer by Rob Boffard, both brilliant reads.

I like The 100 books (which of course I need to finish reading) but I wasn’t sure about the show, will need to try again. I am also not sure about The 5th Wave film, loved the first book (need to read the second!) but worried the film will be meh!

I need to have Illuminae! Hurry up release day!!

    • Aww thanks!! Those sound great, I will have to check them out!

The 100 show starts off very… not good. Then after a few episodes, it gets into its groove and HOLY CRAP. It is so amazing!! And I am glad you liked the books too, I have to get to them soon- but I hear the show is VERY differenT!

And I need to read the second 5th Wave book too- I am kind of excited about the movie, actually!

And YES- get your hands on Illuminae ASAP- it is fabulous! I hope you love it 😀
