Let Me Retell You a Story

TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is: Ten Fairytale Retellings I’ve Read/Want To Read (or you could do fairytales I want to be retold or fairytales I love)

Hey, remember that time when I was afraid of retellings? Good news! I’m not anymore, yay! In fact, I think I had read some without even knowing it. But, I don’t know if I have read enough to have favorites yet- I am lucky if I’ve read ten total, so we’ll just list whatever I have read here, and if I hated it, I’ll let you know! Otherwise, assume it went well. Oh, and these aren’t all fairytales either. Because I still don’t have enough.

ALSO, I just want to thank Eloise, who made the awesome non-book cover graphics I used for the “Retelling of” section. You can find all her work here, and she is awesome for letting people use these, no?

So, time to share! What is one retelling that I must read? Any story or fairytale that you’d love to see a retelling of? Any you’re excited for?

  1. Love Warm Bodies (Movie). It was such an unusual, cute movie, plus I am NOT a zombie fan. 😉

‘The Shadow Queen’ and ‘The Great Hunt’ both sound really good, and I’m reading ‘Ash and Bramble’ now. It’s… quite interesting. Also would love to read ‘Rook’ yet this summer. Here’s hoping. 🙂

  2. Oh my gosh! Some of these I didn’t even know they were retellings!!! Now I want tk read them! I also have A Wicked Thing on my list and Cinder. I’m going to have to add a bunch of these to my TBR! Shannon, why must you do this? I’ll go broke now hahaha

  3. Wow. You have put ina lot of work on this list Very impressive. I love the way you have it organized. This was such a fun post idea this week. I love retellings and you picked some good ones. Drop by my blog and sign up for my give-away. It relates to today’s meme.

  4. Ooooooh I like the way you set this post up. Very nice indeed. I had no idea that Warm Bodies was a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. I have yet to read the book, or watch the movie. I just discovered The Stars Turned Away today, and squeezed it into my post last minute. It sounds so so good. Honestly, I feel like if anything is listed as a retelling, I will always think it sounds good lol.

    • Aw thank you! I had no idea that it was a retelling either actually- my husband said it was after we watched the movie, and when I looked it up, sure enough he was right! Retellings HAVE been sounding quite good to me lately- and luckily, haven’t disappointed (knock on wood!)

  5. This is a gorgeously made list! I’m adding stuff to my tbr – this always happens on Tuesdays. 🙂
I read Cruel Beauty and really liked it, so that’s the one I can recommend.
The Forbidden Wish and The Great Hunt have gorgeous covers, I’ll have to be on the lookout for those!

  6. CRUEL BEAUTY IS A MUST READ FOR SURE. I absolutely love that one (though it’s kinda weird/slow at the start?) And as much as I waaaanted to love Winterspell and Of Metal and Wishes? I, erm, did not. BUT STILL. I think there should be more Phantom of the Opera retellings because PHANTOM OF THE OPERA OMG. *flails*

    • I do want to read Cruel Beauty, I’ve heard some pretty good things! I am saddened that you did not like Winterkill of OMAW, but I have heard they’re both kind of hit or miss, so who knows? Maybe I will like them? Or not, you never know. I agree, more of those retellings for sure!

  7. Oh boy, I sort of hate this week’s theme because by TBR grew by more than inches today. But I also love it because ALL THE BOOKS. I just realised that even though I gush over retellings, I don’t read that many of them in the end — but almost all retelling covers are GORGEOUS, have you noticed? They just have that wonderful aura about them.

  8. AH I need to get my hands on Rook! One day it’ll happen. The Scarlet Pimpernel is one of my favorite books I read in school 😀

Oh and I’m ONE STEP CLOSER to reading Immaculate because it’s actually on my shelves now 😀 Just need to read the thing.

And out of the ones you own, I highly recommend Winterspell 😀 So good!

  9. I can’t believe I haven’t read MOST of these yet! ACOTR and Rook were two of my most anticipated books of the year yet I haven’t been able to read them yet. I vow to get to them before the end of the year. I didn’t realize that Hold Me Like A Breath was a retelling of The Princess and the Pea. Interesting. Great list! At least I’ve read Cinder! Oh, and you MUST read Of Metal and Wishes, it us amazing!

    • You must get reading then 😉 And yep- that is what actually attracted me to HMLAB to begin with, but trust me, it wasn’t a GOOD retelling. Have you read it? I have heard such great things about Of Metal and Wishes, I hope I get to it soon!

  10. I adore the Lunar Chronicles so much; it’s not just ”re-telling” the story but interwines things that happened in the original story into a modern one that has fab characters.
I really loved ACoTaR too. The Wrath of Dawn sounds really good too!!
    I really love re-tellings

  11. Love the way you categorized the books in this list! 😀 I’ve only read a few retellings even though I’m a big fan of retellings myself (It doesn’t make sense, I know). Checking out these books! Great post, Shannon! 😀

  12. Oh man, there are quite a few books up there that I didn’t even KNOW were retellings. I have been going a bit retelling crazy lately because well… I just love them and the idea of them. So I read a lot. The Lunar Chronicles series has to be some of my favourites, and I just got my copy of The Wrath and the Dawn which I am looking forward to as well!
