Lifestyles of the Rich and Fictitious

TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is: Top Ten Books Which Feature Characters Who _____ (are musically inclined, have lost someone, have depression, who grow up poor, etc.)

ttt428

It seems like a lot of beloved characters are, um, not doing so great, especially when we first meet them. Katniss is gnawing on tree bark, Harry’s living in a closet under the stairs, Celaena is in prison, having been raised by wolves assassins…. you get the picture. But some characters grew up more privileged. Of course, this does not mean conflict free, but it does often equate to a pretty ball gown or twenty. Let’s take a look!

ttt4289

Poor (literally) Max has two best friends and they both happen to be filthy rich. One happens to get murdered. So there’s that.

ttt4282

Homegirl is rich. Think parties, and lavish estates, and yes, the aforementioned dresses. But Madeline doesn’t want to just sit around on an estate, she wants to learn. And of course, not everyone is as privileged as she is…

ttt4281

Basically, when you’re rich enough to be buying other humans, you’re probably pretty rich. When your father is a general and wants you to marry into the elite, you’re probably pretty rich. When you develop feelings for your purchased human, you’re…. Kestrel.

ttt4284

One is a criminal from the slums, and one is training in the military’s elite. They’re as different as Day and Night June.

ttt4286

This bunch has money and island estates. As the title suggests, they’re running a bit low on morals.

ttt4288

As Kitty Doe, she’s an orphan destined to life of poverty. As Lila Hart, she’s destined to learn a lot about deceit from society’s upper echelon. In a mansion.

ttt4283

I mean, she lives in this big old southern house with a bunch of people who can use magic. I’m not seeing a downside.

ttt4287

Half the time, Sabine lives in a lovely house with her wealthy family and crappy boyfriend. The other half of the time she does not, but we won’t focus on that right now.

ttt4285

I don’t know if the Lightwood family is rich, but they want for nothing, and they live in a big institute in some special secret realm. That sounds rich to me, even though I am kind of grasping at straws by this point.

ttt4280

Fine, I know this one is out there, but I could not find one more! Besides, is any Top Ten list from me complete without a Hunger Games reference? Besides…

So, have you got any privileged rich kids for me to add to my (non-existent) collection?

  1. Very creative topic choice! I really want to read Liars, Inc. and Landry Park. I loved Pawn & Captive (The Blackcoat Rebellion) and I can’t wait for the next book. You definitely get an A for this week!

    Michelle @ Michelle’s Minions

  2. Great list idea. I thought of billionaires myself but then I couldn’t think of any more than 2 books so I chose vampires instead. ? Happy Tuesday!

    • It was actually really hard! I had thought of a few off the top of my head, but then when I went to write it… it was hard! And I only wanted to include books I’d read, so it was even harder! I am off to read about your vampires now 😉

  3. This is such a great idea! I really want to read Liars, Inc. And I still haven’t read The Winner’s Curse -shame on me. BUT I did read Legend -which I adored- the Hunger Games -of course- and City of Bones -which I really didn’t like as much.

This is such a great list! I’ll definitely try to pick up Liars, Inc, The Winner’s Curse and Pawn soon.

  4. Great list! 🙂 I really tried to think about rich YA characters, but all I can come up with is the characters of the Gossip Girl novels. And I guess the Princess Diaries books too 😀

  5. Cool choice of topic! I think we just love reading about the rich and famous, don’t we? Their lifestyles both fascinate and repulse us. I guess if I was going to add a few people to the list I’d say someone like Gatsby. I don’t really like The Great Gatsby, but there’s no denying that guy’s loaded.

  6. RICHARD GANSEY III. **flails forever because Gaaaansey** heh, he is definitely the epitome of rich. But omg, I love that you did the prompt this way! It’s true! Poor seems more popular?! I don’t know about you, but when I write, I loooove to make characters rich and have cool stuff. heh. BUT I DIGRESS. I need to read, like, all of these books. Except The Hunger Games OF COURSE. Katniss made it to my list this week too, but for very different reasons. XD

OMG I LOVE THE LIGHTWOODS SO MUCH.

    • I, um, haven’t read The Raven Boys yet. (SORRY!)But, at least I knew the reference, right? I promise I will read it soon.

And seriously! WHY is everyone so poor? Maybe I just read a disproportionate amount of books about poor people? I just don’t understand!

  7. I like this list even though I’ve only read three of these (Winner’s Curse, City of Bones, and Hunger Games). This list definitely gave me some more ideas to read.
    Thanks for sharing!

  8. What a great idea for a list! I can’t think of anyone to add, but I always thought Nancy Drew was pretty rich, having a housekeeper and a dad who gave her a car.

    Have a great week!

  9. Ha. Love how you always mention the Hunger Games! This list is fun, so many books in it that want to read… Also, thanks to your title I have the Good Charlotte song stuck in my brain now!

  10. Love the books you have picked out, the topic is very interesting as well 🙂 I loved Legend and The Hunger Games as well! I have yet to check out Laundry Park, it sounds so interesting.
