Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is: Ten Books For Readers Who Like _________
Well. Let me say this upfront: I am bad at these prompts. They encourage me to expand my horizons I guess, and maybe know something about TV or movies, or categories of stuff in general? Listen, I don’t know. The last time I did one, it was a miserable fail, so I will try again but… no promises. I like road trips. Once, I took one from Pennsylvania to Las Vegas, you know, for funsies. Now, since some of these are in a not-so-nice time and place, they aren’t always in a car. But these people have you know, “been through the desert on a horse with no name” or something. I know there are more of these (many more!) but these are the ones I’ve read. And you know, since I adore cheating, two that I want to read really soon.
Seeing as there’s a map on the actual cover, this one is no surprise. Also, I want to hang out with Q’s friends if ever I take a road trip again.
I didn’t love this book, but the part I did really like is the cross country road trip. Because when a phony rapture happens, the best course of action is always to hop in the car and drive like hell to the opposite coast.
Saba did not have the benefit of a car on this trek through the literal dustlands (I mean, the series title even tells you), nor did she have the benefit of any conveniences or the kindness of strangers. This was not a fun trip, but it was a trip nonetheless. Come to think of it, in each of these books she spends a ton of time travelling.
When there’s been a supervolcano, the world is plunged into a frigid darkness, and you can’t find your family, what do you do? Hoof it, of course! But make sure you find Darla, because without Darla, you’re screwed.
This is basically the trip across the country I took, but instead of an old Nissan Sentra, Lynn and Lucy had to use their feet. And instead of stopping at Sonic every 10 miles, they had to hope they’d stumble upon some water. And instead of staying in a hotel, they had to hope a stranger wouldn’t shoot them while they huddled in the woods. So, samesies.
So Finch and Violet’s trips weren’t as epic in length and danger and such as some of the others on this list, but they were fun and they brought them closer, so it’s a win.
Alas, not another fun adventure. They were basically running from Cass’s literal evil twin the whole time, and it took a loooong time for them to get where they were going but… I still love an adventure!
If you are going to make a cross-country trek, the best reason to do it would be if a bunch of people were chasing you, trying to kill you and use you for parts. If that doesn’t make you run like hell, I am going to assume nothing will?
And the ones I haven’t read but am dying to:
Ohh, a mystery! I am going to go out on a limb here and say when creepy ass dudes from the woods ask you to go on a camping trip, you should probably take Nancy Reagan’s advice and “Just Say No”.
A road trip on a bus? Yes, please! (True story, I will have probably bought this book by the end of the week. I needs.)
I love a book with a road trip! 🙂 You’ve just reminded me that I need to read In A Handful of Dust!
Aw thanks! ANd yes, it is SO good. Even better than Not a Drop, I think!
Great list! I really need to read In a handful of dust. Just recently read Not a drop to drink for the first time and I loved it.
Yes, you must! It is SO GOOD. Better even than Not a Drop, IMO! I hope you enjoy it 🙂
OH PAPER TOWNS!!!! YESYESYES. You totally forgot Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour: my favourite roads trip book of all time!
I have to buy that one! I have heard really good things about it, so it is on my TBR for sure!
I’ve just won Mosquitoland in a giveaway on Twitter and I CAN’T WAIT to get it!! Also, I didn’t know All the Bright Places had road trips (I don’t think I did…?) but I just got the book from my Secret Sister and now I’m even more excited to read it!!
I spun the topic a bit and did ten comics for people who would LIKE to try them!
I, um, bought it today 😉 See, I am BAD at this! And YES, they are mini-trips, but still road adventures! And they are one of the best parts of the book 🙂 I hope you enjoy it!
I have seen Mosquitoland popping up all over the place and might have to look into it more. I haven’t read a lot of road trip books other and Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour, but it was interesting enough.
I might have bought it tonight hahha. I knew I wouldn’t last long, but goodness! I do need to read this Amy and Roger business, sounds like my kind of book!
I am sure you will like it. I am not a HUGE contemporary fan, I read them from time to time, but I flew through it. I especially enjoyed the playlists which were included in some chapters.
Ohh, playlists sound fun! I think I will like it too, I am not a huge contemporary reader myself, but I think the premise of it is definitely good enough that I’ll enjoy it! I am so glad you liked it 🙂
Hey, I think you did a great job! My topic is embarrassingly dumb, but I could not come up with anything else. You picked some great books. I really, really want to read Ashfall and Blood Red Road. As for The Devil You Know, I liked The Book a lot, BUT…when cute buy mysterious strangers ask you to travel through the swamps on a trip to DISNEYWORLD…um, maybe you shouldn’t get into that Candy Van…just a thought, lol. Great list!
Michelle @ Michelle’s Minions
Aw thanks! Yours is NOT dumb, I almost did the exact same topic hahah. Because I seriously could not think of a thing to do. This was a HARD prompt!
Also, super jealous that you’ve read The Devil You Know! But I am glad you liked it, and NO you should never, ever get in the molester van for a free ride to Disney 😉
Great topic, Shannon! I love that you included Blood Red Road, and Mosquitoland’s on my TBR, too – it sounds really interesting!
Aw thanks! I may have just bought Mosquitoland, I am kind of the worst at self-control 😉
OMG I love the graphics. And the books you shared. And *gasp* I’ve read none of these books. NONE. I need to read some of them pronto! paper towns… did you know I have read nothing by the man? Even though I follow his and Hanks channel on youtube. *hangs head* I am horrible at reading recommended books. It’s like I must do things at my own pace or it never happens…
Aww thank yoU! I had this idea in my head and I had NO idea how to actually make it, so I am so excited that you think they turned out somewhat normal looking 😉 You haven’t read ANY John Green!? That is blasphemy! I kid, but seriously, how did you manage that one? Paper Towns would be a fun one to start with. Less sobbing than TFIOS 😉
LOL I have a talent for ignoring popular books. I need to work on it, though! Maybe I’ll read Paper towns first, then. 🙂
Haha!!! I love your connections to road trip! I have read a few of these and All the bright things is on my list. Thanks for the share.
Aw thanks! Road trips are just the best 🙂
Great topic! Now that it’s starting to warm up I’m definitely feeling in the mood for a road trip! I haven’t read any of these so I’ll have to go on one through one of these!
Ohh another benefit of spring arriving! I love that, being able to go wherever, not having to obsess about road conditions!
I love the books that can make you take a road trip, this is such a cute post! I loved the graphics used as well, I liked Finch from All The Bright Places the most x
Aww thanks so much! Finch is just the BEST. Now I am both happy and you know, sobbing at the same time 😉
Yes, I love road trips. I been on them and they are pretty fun. I went from NYC to Cal and NYC to Texas which was a blast.
All the Bright Places trip was short but I loved every minute of it :0) and you’re right I loved how Finch and Violet’s trip wasn’t epic but it was fun and brought them closer!
Awesome picks Shannon xoxo
Ohhh wow that sounds VERY fun! TWO epic road trips… I am jealous 😉 And thanks!
Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson is a great road trip book. I have read Paper Towns off this list. I hope to read All the Bright Places soon.
I MUST get that one (scoots off to Amazon to add to wishlist!) And definitely read All the Bright Places… and bring tissues!
I WANT TO READ MOSQUITOLAND SO BAD!! Like pretty please?? I hear it’s amazing. I want to give Paper Towns a try, and same goes for Fire Sermon. Nice list <33
I, um, might have bought it right after writing this post. Bad Shannon, really. I’ll let you know how it is 😉
